Men's Lacrosse Set to Play Scranton in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday

THE STORYLINE
  • The Immaculata men's lacrosse team (14-5, 5-0 Atlantic East) will be making their first appearance in the NCAA tournament.
  • Immaculata enters Wednesday's game after capturing the Atlantic East Conference Championship on Saturday defeating Marymount 15-12 at Draper Walsh Stadium.
  • The University of Scranton (11-8, 9-0 Landmark) captured their third consecutive Landmark Conference Championship defeating Elizabethtown 10-6 on Saturday at Weiss Field.
  • Since this is an NCAA Tournament game there will be a admission charge to attend the game. The cost is $5.00 for adults, and $3.00 for students and seniors. Tickets will be sold at the gate and it is cash only.
 
THE SERIES HISTORY
  • Immaculata and Scranton will be meeting for the third time in their series. This will be the team's first meeting since 2009.
  • Immaculata is 0-2 all-time vs Scranton.
  • Scranton defeated Immaculata 19-4 at Scranton in their last meeting on February 24th, 2009. Brendan Dinneen scored two goals, and Andrew Sim made 17 saves in goal for Immaculata.
 
IMMACULATA NCAA HISTORY
  • This will be Immaculata's first trip to the NCAA Tournament in program history.
  • Immaculata is making history as the first team to win the Atlantic East Conference Championship and go to the NCAA Tournament other than Cabrini.
 
UNIVERSITY OF SCRANTON NCAA HISTORY
  • Scranton will be making their third consecutive appearance and their fourth appearance in program history in this year's NCAA Tournament.
  • Scranton defeated John Carroll 10-9 in overtime at home in the first round of the tournament in 2024. They fell at Dickinson 22-9 in the second round.
  • In 2023, Scranton fell to Gettysburg 22-9 in the second round at Christopher Newport.
  • Scranton's first appearance in the NCAA tournament was in 2011 where they fell at Gettysburg 8-3 in the first round.
 
MIGHTY MAC NOTES
  • Immaculata completed an undefeated run through the Atlantic East Conference, going 5-0 in the regular season, and 2-0 in the conference tournament.
  • This has been the best season in the program's 19-year history, winning a program record 14 games.
  • Immaculata has won a program best 11 consecutive games, with their last loss coming on March 14th to Drew 9-8 in overtime in the Leanos Cup Tournament.
  • Bailey Manion earned AEC Championship MVP honors on Saturday scoring eight goals to tie his own IU single game record for goals. Manion has a team high of 50 goals, with 19 assists for 69 points. Manion has 24 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers. Manion became Immaculata's all-time leading goal scorer with his 153rd goal vs Marywood on April 12th. Manion now has 170 career goals.
  • David Azzarano has 43 goals, with team highs in assists with 51, and points with 94. He has 49 ground balls, and 19 caused turnovers. Azzarano scored one goal and three assists in Saturday's AEC Championship Game. Azzarano became Immaculata's all-time leader in points with his 227th career point on a goal against Drew on March 14th. Azzarano currently has 288 career points.
  • Connor Teears scored 30 goals, with 17 assists for 47 points. He had 46 ground balls and seven caused turnovers. He scored one goal and had three assists in Immaculata's AEC semifinal win over Gwynedd Mercy on April 26th.
  • Joseph Biuso scored one goal and had one assist on Saturday. Biuso scored 35 goals, with 10 assists for 45 points. He had 23 ground balls, and seven caused turnovers.
  • Ryan Gorman scored 31 goals, with nine assists for 40 points. He has 15 ground balls and two caused turnovers. Gorman scored the final goal for Immaculata to help close out Saturday's win.
  • Goalkeeper Matthew Ludlow has been outstanding for Immaculata this season. Ludlow has made 209 saves on 580 shots faced and is 11-5 this season. Ludlow made 13 saves in Saturday's championship game, including three in the fourth quarter while Immaculata was protecting a 12-11 lead.
  • Aidan Lawrence leads the Immaculata defensive core with team highs in ground balls with 64 and caused turnovers with 34. Lawrence had six ground balls, and four caused turnovers in Saturday's win over Marymount.
  • Colton Rhoades has 41 ground balls and 23 caused turnovers. With 2:47 remaining in the fourth quarter on Saturday, with Immaculata clinging to a 13-12 lead, Rhoades caused a Marymount turnover and scooped up the ground ball. Immaculata would score their 14th goal to take a two-goal lead on that possession.
  • Robbie Wishart has 44 ground balls and has 17 caused turnovers. Wishart had two ground balls and a caused turnover on Saturday.
  • Daniel Alvarez has 34 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers. He had three ground balls and a caused turnover in Saturday's championship game.
  • Ben Wesolowski scored two goals in Saturday's championship game, including a fourth quarter behind the back shot goal to give Immaculata a 13-11 lead with 9:04 remaining. Wesolowski scored 21 goals and had nine assists this season.
  • Head Coach Will Pilat led Immaculata to their first conference championship in his second season as Head Coach. Prior to arriving at Immaculata, Pilat spent seven years coaching on the coaching staff at Wesleyan University as Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator including Wesleyan's 2018 National Championship team. As a player Pilat was a two-time USILA All-American Honorable Mention attackmen in 2015 and 2016 playing for Roanoke College under his father Head Coach Bill Pilat.
 
SCOUTING SCRANTON
  • Like Immaculata, Scranton enters the NCAA Tournament having won 11 consecutive games. Scranton was 9-0 in Landmark Conference regular season play and went 2-0 in the Landmark Conference Tournament.
  • Scranton lost their first eight games of the season, before winning their final 11 games.
  • Junior attacker Quinn Carson scored 33 goals, with 13 assists for 46 points.
  • Junior midfielder Jason Kozak scored 31 goals, with 15 assists for 46 points.
  • Junior attacker Kyle Holmes scored a team-high 40 goals, with five assists for 45 points.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Carsen Kirchner was 11-7 and made 222 saves on 682 shots faced. He made 11 saves in Scranton's Landmark Championship win over Elizabethtown.
  • Junior midfielder John O'Connor was 160-327 (.489) on faceoffs.
  • Senior defender Zachariah Palinkas had a team-high of 22 caused turnovers and had 43 ground balls.
  • As a team the Royals averaged 41.8 shots per game, and their opponents 40.2.
  • Scranton was 7-53 on man up opportunities, while their opponents were 7-40.

  • The winner of Wednesday's First Round game advances to play at No. 7 Washington and Lee in the second round on Saturday, May 10th at 12:00 p.m. at Wilson Field in Lexington, Va.
