Second Half Propels Field Hockey To 4-3 Win Against Bryn Mawr

IMMACULATA, Pa. – A strong second half performance by the Immaculata University field hockey team propelled the Mighty Macs (2-0) to a 4-3 win in their home opener against visiting Bryn Mawr College (2-1) Thursday night.
 
Immaculata scored all four of its goals in just over a 12-minute span during the second half. Senior Megan Donegan scored two goals and assisted on one more. Senior Cayla Williams and sophomore Layne Kennedy each had one goal and one assist. Freshman Willa Thompson and sophomore Colleen Bradley added one assist each.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Bryn Mawr scored the only goal of the first half in the 19th minute as Leia Robinson managed to come out of a pack in front of the cage to score the goal.
- The Owls took a 2-0 advantage in the 42nd minute when Mary Cugini corralled a deflection off the goalie's pads and pushed the ball into the cage.
- The Mighty Macs answered back 10 minutes later when Donegan was able to angle her stick in the air to deflect the ball that came off both Thompson and Kennedy's into the top of the cage.
- Williams then tied the game at 2-2 in the 56th minute when she scored off Immaculata's penalty corner attempt. Donegan inserted the ball, Bradley stopped and pushed it to Williams, who immediately shot for the goal.
- The third goal came in the 61st minute as the Mighty Macs again capitalized on a penalty corner. Donegan inserted the ball into the center of the circle to Williams, who then passed it back to Donegan for the quick score.
- Kennedy provided the game-winning goal for Immaculata in the 64rd minute as she scored on a feed from Wood.
- Bryn Mawr added a goal with 46 second remaining off a penalty corner to make it 4-3.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Goals: Donegan had two goals to move her into second time all-time at IU in career goals. Williams and Kennedy each with one goal.
- Assists: Bradley, Thompson, Kennedy, Williams and Donegan each with one assist.
- Points: Donegan recorded five points in the game putting her at 11 points so far this season. Her points tonight also advance her to second in the IU career record book with 61 points.
- Shots: Donegan attempted a team-high three shots.
- Saves: Randie Kuhar made her first career start for the Mighty Macs making two saves during the first half. Jackie Victor played the second half to get credit for the win, while making two saves. Williams saved two goals for the Mighty Macs with two defensive saves during the first half.  
- Team Stats: Bryn Mawr outshot Immaculata, 12-5, including 7-0 during the first half, and the Owls held a 14-7 advantage in penalty corners.  
 
COACHES CORNER
"The second half proved that we wanted to win and weren't going to settle for a loss," said head coach Kate Fay. "With a new formation and adjustments to players positions, we were able to play as a whole team. The offensive opportunities we had were created by mutual trust, determination and aggression. I'm really proud of how the players turned it around and didn't give up."
