IMMACULATA, Pa.- On a rainy Thursday afternoon the Immaculata field hockey team (7-12, 3-4 CSAC) played host to the Cabrini University Cavaliers (10-6, 6-1 CSAC), and the Cavs would go on to win by a final score of 3-2 to end the Mighty Macs season. IU needed a win in today's game and a loss by Keystone to reach the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) postseason for the first time since 2014.
The Macs entered this game on a two game win streak outscoring their opponents 17-2 over that stretch.
In the first half the Cavs out possessed and outshot the Macs by a 13 to four margin and seven to two in terms of shots on goal. The Cavs would open the scoring in the 16
th minute when junior Maddy Worley took a pass from senior Taylor Mack to make the score 1-0. The Cavs would score again in the 27
th minute when Sara Johnsen scored on a one timer off the pass from Mack to make the lead 2-0.
The Macs answered right back in the 29
th minute when sophomore
Jackie Wood took a pass from freshman
Colleen Bradley and converted it to make the score 2-1 heading to the half. Senior goalie
Sarah Pasternak would stand tall making five saves in the first half to keep the Macs in the game.
In the second half the Cavs continued to control the possession. They added one more goal in the 46
th minute when Worley converted for her second goal of the day off an assist from junior Alex Swallow after the ball was tipped around in front to make the score 3-1. The Macs defense continued to battle throughout the duration of the second half and Pasternak would finish the day with 13 saves. The Macs offense closed the gap in the closing minutes when
Layne Kennedy scored with 2:25 left on the clock off a pass to the far post from junior
Megan Donegan to make the score 3-2. The Macs offense would continue to threaten in the closing seconds but they were unable to break through.
This was the final game of the season for the Macs and they would end the season with a 7-12 record.
The seven wins were the second most in the last 20 years, and the 37 goals scored was second most in program history behind 49 scored in 2014.
Pasternak finished her career with 597 saves and tied for the most wins in program history for a goalie with 17. Donegan is now tied for third in career points with 50 heading into her final season.
