LANGHORNE, Pa. –
Rick Gehman went 6-for-7 with five RBI as Immaculata picked up its first Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) victories with a doubleheader sweep over Philadelphia Biblical Monday afternoon. The Mighty Macs took game one 11-7 and responded with a 15-4 decision in game two.
Immaculata (7-11, 2-3 CSAC) is 6-3 over its last nine contests and could pull even in conference play with a win over Philadelphia Bible in tomorrow's rubber match of the three-game series.
The Mighty Macs squandered a 6-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning when the Crimson Eagles posted six runs on the strength of a grand slam and a two-run shot. However, Immaculata answered with three runs in its half of the fifth and two more in the sixth to put the game away.
Andrew Ellis (1-0) picked up the win in relief by getting the Mighty Macs out of the fateful fifth inning and tossing 2.1 innings of four-hit ball, allowing just one run in the top of the seventh that was a little too late for the Eagles.
Richard Cusic hit a solo home run for Immaculata in the fourth inning. The Mighty Macs scored in every inning in which they batted, except the third. Gehman was 3-for-3 in the opener with a pair of runs scored and a pair of RBI. Cusic finished with three RBI in the first game as well.
In the nightcap, Immaculata jumped out to a 12-0 lead with help from an eight-run third and never looked back. Gehman was 3-for-4 with three RBI in the second game. Ernell Harley (2-0) picked up the win, lasting six innings in the start and striking out eight.
The Mighty Macs took advantage of two errors and one passed ball to score eight unearned runs in the third inning. Gehman hit a two-run single, and
Kris Hazlett and Cusic each contributed sacrifice flies while
Matt Hardy homered to highlight Immaculata's third inning.
Harley yielded four runs, three of them earned, on eight hits. He did not walk a batter before giving way to
Andrew Dietrich, who pitched the seventh.
Aaron Dietrich hit a two-run homer in the fifth.
Immaculata takes on Philadelphia Bible tomorrow afternoon in the final game of the team's three-game CSAC series.
