Baseball Dealt Setback in AEC Playoffs by Marymount Saints

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Immaculata baseball could not keep up with the Marymount University Saints' offense on Thursday, falling 5-2. With the Atlantic East Conference playoffs being double elimination, the Mighty Macs face potential elimination on Friday.

While the game was originally scheduled to be at Marymount on Wednesday, with the rest of the tournament being at Centenary University, the Immaculata-Marymount contest was also moved to Centenary due to weather.

The Mighty Macs are 15-23 for the season. They are 10-8 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MARYMOUNT
  • Both teams put runners on base in the first inning, but both defenses shut down the possibility of a scorer. A quick second inning transitioned into the third, where the Saints got on the board via a score on the throw. Simultaneously, the Mighty Macs caught a runner stealing second. Alex LePage struck out the final batter of the inning, with Marymount up 1-0 after three.
  • A Saints sac-fly in the fourth gave them their second score of the day. The Saints would add three runs across the fifth and sixth innings, the first two of which were on consecutive RBI doubles. Marymount led 5-0 through six.
  • The Mighty Macs broke through the Saints' defense in the top of the eighth. With bases loaded, Hunter Weitzel knocked in an RBI single to eliminate the zero on the board. After a pitching change, a JT Luther sac-fly brought Matt Passerini around home plate. However, with two men on base, and with the tying run at the plate, Marymount caught a runner stealing third to retire the offensive drive. Immaculata had a man on first and second in the top of the ninth, but a groundout ended the game. Marymount won 5-2.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Josh Goulburn and Passerini each had one run.
  • Passerini was the team leader with three hits.
