Immaculata Baseball Gets Split With Gwynedd-Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Immaculata University split its Colonial States Athletic Conference doubleheader with Gwynedd-Mercy College on Saturday afternoon as the Mighty Macs took game one, 9-7, and dropped the nightcap, 14-5.

Immaculata is now 11-16 overall and 5-7 in the conference. Gwynedd-Mercy improves to 16-11, 10-5 CSAC.

Immaculata wasted little time in the opener, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first. Matt Hardy, Joe Rawlings and Kris Hazlett all had RBI in the inning.   

Gwynedd-Mercy cut the Immaculata lead to 5-3 after the Griffins plated three runs in the top of the third. However, Immaculata scored four more runs in the bottom half of the third. Chris Dickinson had a RBI single that score Brandon Seibert, and Rick Gehman had a two-RBI double that plated Rawlings and Dickinson.

Gwynedd-Mercy tried to claw its way back into the game with three runs in the fourth and scored one run in the top of the seventh.

Joe Rawlings went 3-for-4, scored two runs and drove in one in the game one victory. Chris Dickinson was 2-for-2 with one RBI , and Seibert and Hazlett each went 2-for-3. Gehman and Halzett each registered a pair of RBI.

Ernell Harley picked up the win in the opener for the Mighty Macs, pitching six innings and allowing just two earned runs on six hits. He walked six and struck out four. Richard Cusic pitched the final inning to pick up the save.

In game two, Gwynedd-Mercy scored runs in each of the first four innings, highlighted by a five-run fourth inning, to jump ahead 13-5 after four innings in the book.

Immaculata answered Gwynedd-Mercy's three runs in the first with three of its own. The Mighty Macs' half of the first was highlighted by Patrick Boulware's RBI triple.

The Griffins scored four runs in the second and the Mighty Macs tried to keep pace with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. However, Immaculata's bats went quiet during the final five innings as Gwynedd-Mercy limited IU to just four hits.

Boulware and Dickinson each picked up two hits in the nightcap, and Boulware had two RBI.

Andrew Dietrich began the game on the mound for the Mighty Macs. He lasted 1.2 innings after giving up three earned runs on five hits. Andrew McCoy came on for 0.2 innings, giving up one run on one hit. McCoy was relieved by Cusic, who lasted 3.2 innings, allowing six runs on four hits. Andrew Ellis finished out the contest, giving up just one hit in one inning of work.

John Barrington pitched six innings to earn the win. He gave up five runs on seven hits, walked five and struck out three.

Immaculata heads to York on Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
