IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Immaculata women's volleyball team is set to open up their season on Thursday evening as they host Penn State Brandywine at 7:00 P.M. The Mighty Macs have wrapped up their preseason schedule and are set to kick off the 2022 season.
"Throughout camp, our team instantly connected and formed a strong bond," said head coach
Rob Smith. "This will allow the team to be able to push each other while still having fun!"
On the 2021 season, the Macs posted a 6-14 record, dropping their Atlantic East Quarterfinal match against Neumann 3-0. Heading into the 2022 campaign, the Macs were voted sixth overall in the Atlantic East Preseason Coaches' Poll.
Isabelle Davis acts as the lone senior on the Immaculata volleyball squad this season. Davis ended the 2021 season second on the team in kills. Immaculata also returns three key pieces to their offense in
Ava Thorley,
Isabella Ridgell, and
Emily Ettien. Thorley and Ridgell rank first and third respectively in kills on 2021 while Ettien led the Macs in both assists and service aces.
"We gave a great core of upperclassmen returning this season," detailed Smith. "They are strong leaders and have been instrumental in helping the team prepare for an exciting season."
Additionally, the Macs have a junior transfer in
Lily Burnette who will be set to make an instant impact on the season at the libero position. Additionally, the Macs have brought in a five-person freshman class that will seek their opportunity to make a difference on the court:
Katie Healy,
Samantha Pastore,
Emma Hodgson,
Mia Esposito, and
Diana Rivera.
"All of our newcomers have been fantastic and have a ton of potential," explained Smith. " We are excited to see both freshman middle blockers step on the court as starters as well as our new libero, and contribute to our offense."
The Macs open up their season at home on Thursday against the Nittany Lions of Penn State Brandywine.
"Based on the preseason and opening scrimmage, I have high expectations for this team. They have created a team unity which will continue get stronger throughout the season," closed Smith.
