IMMACULATA, Pa.-
Following a short four-game season during the 2020-21 year, the Immaculata men's soccer team returns to the field for the Fall 2021 campaign as the reigning Atlantic East Champions, seeking to defend its 2019 Title.

Immaculata, who was picked second in the Atlantic East Preseason poll released a week ago, will open its season on Wednesday, September 1st, on the road at McDaniel before visiting Swarthmore and Widener on September 4th and 5th to conclude a three-game road trip to open the 2021 season.

"I am excited for the season," began Head Coach Rich Punt. "Our preseason was awesome as the players had a great buzz about them during what was our first chance to go through a full preseason a couple of years. We also had a great scrimmage, which gave us the chance to get a good look at as many of our players as possible, playing every available player during that at the end of last week. Looking back at last year, we had a great spring season earlier this year, but we have a pretty different team, having brought in a large freshman class and having lost some players to graduation at the end of last year. I think the Atlantic East will be wide-open much like it is every season, so we will try to take it one game a time and prepare individually for each game throughout the year to be successful this season," said Punt.

During the abridged 2020-21 season, Immaculata took to the field on four occasions, playing to a mark of 1-1-1 in these contests with a win and a draw vs. Wesley while falling to Cabrini in the season finale. Immaculata also traveled to Marywood for an exhibition, which the Macs won in convincing fashion by a 3-0 final.

Josh Fonder, the 2019 Atlantic East Rookie of the Year, led the squad in scoring once again last Spring with three goals and one assist for a total of seven points on the year, in what was an impressive encore performance to his 10-goal and one assist (21 points) performance, which he turned in two years ago as a freshman. Fellow junior John Bohrer also enjoyed a strong spring season as he scored a pair of goals for a total of four points on the year after scoring three goals (including the Atlantic East Championship game-winner) as a freshman in 2019. Chad Catalana, who will be returning to the Macs for a fifth season in 2021, also found the back of the net once a season ago while continuing to play a vital role on the Mighty Mac defensive unit, which enabled him to earn his second consecutive Atlantic East All-Conference honor at the end of the 2019 season.

On the defensive end of the field for Immaculata, the Macs will look to the likes of Catalana, Jacob Fitzgerald, Stephen Bradley, and Zachary Malcolm to provide critical veteran leadership to the Mighty Mac defensive unit. In goal, Immaculata will need to fill the void left by the graduation of four-year starter Mikey Kalpokas. Kalpokas ended his career as one of the best goalies in program history as he holds the program record for both wins and shutouts while ranking second in team history in saves, third in goals-against average, and fifth in save percentage. Immaculata has three goalies who will vie for the starting role this year with senior Garrett Pepper along with a pair of freshmen in John Wilhelm and Ryan Straub. During the 2019 season, Pepper appeared in four games with three starts, playing to a record of 1-1-1 with one shutout on the season.

"The experience our veterans bring is going to be crucial this year. Having not played a full season since 2019, we are going to look to them to help our younger players understand and learn the process of going through a full and long college season," explained Punt.

Wilhelm and Straub are two of a talented 20-player freshman class, which also includes Dylan Walter, Michael Balestriere, AJ DiPaolo, Oliver Wilkins, Phillip Lyons, Sean Franks, Anthony Mastro, Kaelin Hatcher, Matthew Armas, Damian Szumigraj, Collin Hassay, Jack Huber, Reed Lindsay, Matthew Kirkpatrick, Aiden Kollar, Arthur Gramlich, Enrique Hernandez-Kurst, and Dylan Roberts who will all look to help contribute to the Mighty Mac's success in 2021.

"Bringing in such a big class is important for us as it enables us to generate real competition for places and have great depth in every position," began Punt. "We are excited to have a number of incoming players who definitely appear to be college ready and can help us throughout this upcoming season," concluded the Macs second-year head coach.
