IMMACULATA, Pa.- After advancing to the Atlantic East Championship game in 2018 and the Semifinal round in 2019, head coach
Zena Tracey and the Immaculata women's soccer team enter the 2021 season eager to continue their recent success following a shortened 2020 season.
In the preseason poll, released by the Atlantic East Conference a week ago, Immaculata was tabbed picked to finish third in the league with 26 points and one first-place vote. The Macs begin their season on September 2
nd with a home game against non-league foe Haverford before hosting Bryn Mawr on September 5
th to conclude a brief two-game homestand to open the year. Immaculata returns to the field on the heels of a successful Spring season, which took the place of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 Global Pandemic. During the shortened 2020 season, Immaculata played to a record of 2-1-1 with victories over Wesley and Marywood while playing to a draw with Cabrini and falling to Marywood in the final game of the regular season.
"I am feeling really confident about the upcoming season," opened Tracey. "The girls are very excited to get back to some normalcy. We are starting to be recognized by the other members of our conference as a top competitor, which I am looking forward to the girls owning and using to their advantage this season. Despite our short spring season, I was excited by our team chemistry; we were clicking and falling in sync, which I would love to see continue into this season. Preseason was very refreshing; after not having preseason on campus for two years, it was nice to get on our beautiful turf field and go to work. We saw a lot of good things throughout the week, and I am excited to see how the girls approach the non-conference games before we get into conference play," continued Tracey.
Similarly to her breakout rookie season in 2019,
Kelli Dombroski led the Macs in goals in 2020 as she tallied a pair of goals, including the eventual game-winner in the Macs victory over Marywood. Fellow junior
Kristen Guthier also enjoyed a strong 2020 season, serving as the Macs facilitator, ending the year with a team-best four assists.
Bridget McDonough and
Jessica Gindle also entered the scoring column for Immaculata last season as they each scored one goal on the year, while Gindle's goal served as the game-winner in Immaculata's season-opening 2-1 victory over Wesley. Gindle's game-winner over Wesley also served as her first collegiate goal in her first collegiate contest. Additionally, Immaculata will also look to
Tanis McDonnell and Corrine Karas to continue making an impact on both ends of the field for the team this season, after each scoring a pair of goals as freshmen in 2019 while also being critical components of the Mighty Mac defensive unit.
On the defensive end of the field,
Brooke Shissler led the way for the Macs between the pipes once again in 2020, playing to a record of 2-1-1 with a 1.78 goals-against average and 24 saves to limit opposing offenses throughout the season. Joining Shissler between the pipes is a talented group of goalkeepers led by fellow senior
Maddy Terry alongside sophomore
Sierra Cruz and freshman
Gina Marinelli and
Brianna Latham.
"I feel that our leadership is at an all-time high this year. Each upperclassman is playing a different role in helping the newcomers get acclimated to our team culture. Under the leadership of our captains
Brooke Shissler,
Kristen Guthier, and
Erynn Kriebel, I am looking to them to lead by example. With their commitment and dedication to succeeding, we have a lot of potential to make a run at an Atlantic East Championship this season," stated Tracey.
Marinelli and Latham are two members of a talented 10-player group of newcomers for the Mighty Macs this season as
Paige Lindsay,
Janelle Kern,
Rachel McNamee,
Allison Holden,
Kelsey Caldarelli,
Steph Marinelli,
Alex Sicari, and Mary Grace McDonald will join the Mighty Macs and look to help contribute to the Mighty Mac's success in 2021.
"Our newcomers have already begun making an impact on the team. There is a lot of talent and versatility, which will be beneficial for us throughout the season. They bring a new sense of enthusiasm and are committed to wanting to grow and get better every day," concluded Tracey.
