READING, Pa.- The Mighty Macs played a non-conference game on the road on Wednesday afternoon at Penn State-Berks (14-15) and IU fell in a 5-0 hole after two innings and were unable to recover in a 9-4 defeat. The loss drops the Macs to 20-6 on the season.
Senior shortstop
Ryan Ficca became the 10
th member of the 100-hit club at Immaculata with his two singles on the day. Senior centerfielder
Jason McCormick (R, BB, SB), senior left fielder
Matt Simon (R, 2B), and freshman third baseman
Chris Szekeres Jr. (2B, BB) all had two hits as well.
Junior
Collin Stringham (1-1) got the start, but struggled as he allowed five runs through 1 2/3 innings and the Macs trailed 5-0 just two innings in.
They got a couple back in the top of the third as senior designated hitter
Howie Kalamets (RBI, BB) hit a sacrifice fly, and junior catcher
Justin Dempsey (1-for-3, RBI) singled in McCormick to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Sophomore
Zach Smiley steadied the game for IU as he kept Berks off the scoreboard through the fourth with 2 1/3 innings of shutout ball.
The Macs added another in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by junior second baseman
Pat Devenney (1-for-4, R, 2 RBI) to slice the deficit again to 5-3, however, the Nittany Lions put up three big runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-3.
The teams traded runs in the eighth, but IU would get no closer.
The Macs hope to bounce back on Friday when they open a series with Gwynedd Mercy at home at 3 p.m.
