LANGHORNE, Pa.- The Immaculata baseball team (16-4, 11-1 CSAC) extended their program-best start in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play to 11-1, tying the program record for CSAC wins in a season, with a doubleheader sweep of Cairn (13-12, 3-9 CSAC) on Monday afternoon by scores of 10-5 and 10-2.
Â
In the opener, junior
Trevor O'Brien cruised through six innings and was supported by home runs from senior
Howie Kalamets and junior
Justin Dempsey, and in the second game, junior
Ryan Blough received plenty of runs and combined with sophomore
Billy Manzo to toss a two-hitter in the victory.
Â
Kalamets (3-for-4, 2 R, 2B) and Dempsey (2-for-3, 2 R, 2B) each had four RBIs in big openers, and senior centerfielder
Jason McCormick (3 R, RBI, 2B, HBP) had two hits.
Â
O'Brien (4-1) twirled a complete game while allowing five runs (four earned) and striking out five.
Â
Each pitcher put up three consecutive zero's to start the game, including O'Brien retiring the first nine to send the game to the fourth locked at 0-0.Â
Â
In the top of the fourth, McCormick and Kalamets hit back-to-back singles to lead off the frame. A groundout moved them up a base and Dempsey stroked a double to centerfield to score two, and he moved to third on an error. Senior left fielder
Matt Simon (1-for-4, RBI) brought Dempsey home with a groundout to make it 3-0 midway through the game.
Â
O'Brien allowed the first baserunner with a single, but quickly erased it with a double play and a line out to end the fourth.
Â
In the fifth, the Macs blew the game open with six more runs. Senior right fielder
Dom Ficca (1-for-2, R) singled to lead off the inning and a walk by junior second baseman
Pat Devenney put two on base. McCormick doubled to center to bring one home, and Kalamets struck his third home run of the season with a line drive to left field to balloon the lead to 7-0. Senior shortstop
Ryan Ficca walked and Dempsey hit his second run of the year to left field to make it 9-0.
Â
Cairn got on the board in the fifth, an IU talked on another in the seventh on an RBI double by Kalamets. The Highlanders scored four in the seventh, but O'Brien got a groundout to end it.
Â
In the second game, McCormick (3 R, SB, HBP) broke the school runs scored record for a career and joined Kalamets (R, HBP) and
Dom Ficca (2 R, BB, 2B) with two hits in the contest. Junior second baseman
Pat Devenney went three RBIs in the win.
Â
Blough (5-1) went five innings and struck out six and Manzo went two innings and struck out two. Both allowed one unearned run.
Â
The Macs loaded the bases with nobody out in the first on singles by McCormick and Kalamets, and a walk by
Ryan Ficca, but a double play slowed the rally while allowing McCormick to score. Senior
Matt Simon (1-for-4, R, 2B, RBI) doubled home Kalamets and came around to score on back-to-back wild pitches for a 3-0 IU lead early on.
Â
Blough danced around a bases loaded jam in the first and allowed a run in the second, before escaping the third unscathed for a 3-1 leading heading to the fourth. The Macs extended their lead to 6-1 with three runs in their half of the fourth. Senior first baseman
Ryan Tecco (R, SB, 2 BB) scored on a wild pitch, and Devenney executed a squeeze to score
Dom Ficca, who doubled earlier in the winning. McCormick started the rally again with two outs with a single, and a single by Kalamets combined with an error allowed McCormick to score for a 6-1 lead.
Â
The Macs put the game away with four runs in the top of the sixth. The inning was highlighted by a two-run single from Devenney, an RBI fielder's choice by
Ryan Ficca, and an RBI single by
Brad Misialek for a 10-1 lead.
Â
Manzo surrendered one in the sixth and the Macs finished off the 10-2 win.
Â
IU will head to Alvernia for a non-conference game on Tuesday.
