Â
The first half started out well for the Mighty Macs as they scored the first four goals of the game behind two from Dominick and one each from Kennedy and Verrecchia as IU held a 4-0 just eight minutes into the game. However, Gwynedd Mercy battled back as they scored four of the next five goals to make it a 5-3 game with 17:51 to go in the game. A free position tally from Whaley was the only goal during that stretch.
Â
The Mighty Mac offense then kicked into high gear for the final 17 minutes of the period as they outscored the Griffins 10-1, led by Verrecchia, and took a commanding 15-4 lead into the locker room.
Â
Reitman scored on a free-position opportunity, and Verrecchia followed that with back-to-back goals to extend the lead to 8-3 with 9:48 remaining. Whaley netted her second and third of the half around a goal from Katona to make it 11-3 as the Macs had ripped off six straight.
Â
Gwynedd scored just 16 seconds later to halt the IU run, but the momentum was still there as Verrecchia scored her fourth and fifth of the half and Kennedy and Reitman each added their second, including one with 15 seconds to go by Reitman to make it 15-4 heading to halftime.
Â
The Macs put the game away early in the second half as Kennedy, Verrecchia and Whaley scored in the first 18 minutes while the Macs did not allow a goal until the 7:59 mark and finished off the 18-6 win.
Â
IU will now travel to Cedar Crest on Saturday for a CSAC contest.
