Verrecchia Scores 100th Career Goal In Tight Defeat At King's

Box Score

WILKES-BARRE, Pa.- Facing a five goal deficit with just over nine minutes to go in the game on the road at King's College (3-4), the IU women's lacrosse team (4-3) battled back with four consecutive goals late in the game, but the comeback effort ran out of time as they fell 13-12.  In the loss, junior Hannah Verrecchia scored four goals to eclipse the 100-goal mark for her career becoming the ninth Mighty Mac to reach the mark.

Junior Rosemarie Reitman (three goals, one assist), junior Nicole Dominick (four assists), and freshman Layne Kennedy (two goals, two assists) all joined Verrecchia with four points.  Junior Brittany Whaley, senior Bridget Polansky, and senior Meredith Katona each scored a goal as well.

Polansky and freshman goalie Emily Schumann had three groundballs each to lead the team.  Schumann made 11 saves in the cage.

The Mighty Macs held the lead for most of the first half as Verrecchia scored the first two goals of the game, and after the Lions tied it 2-2, Kennedy scored on an assist from Reitman to put the Macs in front 3-2.  The score held there until the middle of the first half when King's scored five straight to take a lead they would not relinquish.

Whaley scored on Dominick's third assist of the half just before the break to send the game to the locker room at 7-4.

The teams traded goals to open the half, but King's scored three straight and held IU scoreless for 14 minutes to make it 11-5 at the midway point of the half.

Kennedy scored her team leading 22nd of the season followed by Verrecchia's 100th career tally to pull IU within four at 11-7.

King's scored two of the next three to make it 13-8 with 9:38 to go when the Macs mounted a furious rally.

Katona, Reitman and Verrecchia scored to make it 13-11, and Reitman scored again with 90 seconds to go making it a one-goal game, but the Macs were unable to tie it up.

The Macs will travel to Gwynedd Mercy for a CSAC clash on Wednesday night.
