FORT PIERCE, Fla.- The Immaculata baseball team wrapped up their seven game Florida Coast Spring Training trip on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Geneva College (2-6). The Macs finished their trip to Florida at 4-3.
In the opener, the Macs got an outstanding effort on the mound from junior
Ryan Blough (1-0) as he went six innings and allowed just two hits and one run while striking out seven to seal a 6-1 victory. In the second game, senior
Kyle Bacher came on in relief in a tight contest and earned the save with 1 2/3 innings of work to preserve a 6-3 win.
In the first game, Blough worked around a pair of walks in the first inning and a single in the third to send the game scoreless to the bottom of the third when the IU offense got on the board. Freshman second baseman
Greg Grandelli (1-for-2, R, BB) hit a one out single and moved to third on a double by senior centerfielder
Jason McCormick (1-for-3, R, RBI). Grandelli came in to score on an error by the right fielder and McCormick made it 2-0 after scoring on a sacrifice fly by senior shortstop
Ryan Ficca (3 BB, RBI). Freshman catcher
Tyler Kmiec (1-for-3, 2 R, RBI, SB) came around to score on the second error of the inning to put the Macs in front 3-0 through three innings.
Geneva got on the board with a single run in the fourth, but that would be it for them against Blough.
The Macs responded immediately in their half of the fourth as McCormick walked with the bases loaded and Kmiec hit a sacrifice fly to make it 5-1 through four innings.
Blough cruised through his final two innings, and the Macs tacked on another run in the sixth as Kmiec doubled, stole third, and scored on a passed ball to make it 6-1.
Sophomore
Billy Manzo came on to close it out for the victory.
In game two, junior
Trevor O'Brien got the ball and attempted to follow Blough's effort. The Macs staked him to an early lead as McCormick (1-for-1, RBI, 2 HBP, 2 SB, 2 R) was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI groundout by senior shortstop
Ryan Ficca (1-for-4, R, RBI).
Geneva took advantage of lead-off walk in their half of the first to tie the game 1-1, but the Macs took the lead for good in the second inning.
Senior first baseman
Ryan Tecco (1-for-2, R, 2 BB) doubled to left and moved to third on a single by senior right fielder
Dom Ficca (2-for-3, R, HBP), and both came around to score on a fielder's choice by junior second baseman
Pat Devenney (1-for-4, 2 RBI, SB) as the Macs led 3-1 through two after a 1-2-3 inning by O'Brien.
The score would hold at 3-1 through four innings as O'Brien allowed a single and a walk as the only baserunners after the first.
In the fifth, the Macs extended their lead as McCormick reached on a single and came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 4-1.
O'Brien ran into some trouble in the fifth as he walked the bases loaded with two outs, but sophomore
Brandon Shapiro came on in relief to get the final out of the inning. O'Brien went 4 2/3 innings and allowed just two hits and one run to match Blough earlier in the day.
In the sixth, the Macs tacked on another run to extend their lead to 5-1 as junior third baseman
Brad Misialek walked with one out, moved to third on a single by Devenney before a sacrifice fly by McCormick brought him home.
Geneva then mounted a threat as they scored two runs and put runners on second and third with one out, but senior
Kyle Bacher came in and struck out the first hitter and induced a fly out to end the rally with IU up 5-3.
The Macs added a crucial insurance run as
Ryan Ficca led off with a double and came around to score to make it 6-3.
Bacher gave up a pair of singles in the seventh, but got a fielder's choice to end the game and clinch the doubleheader sweep.
The Macs are scheduled to open their home schedule on Tuesday against Haverford.
