Women Fall To Franklin & Marshall In Tip-Off Classic Opener

LANCASTER, Pa. – Immaculata women's basketball had a trio score in double figures, led by freshman Shannon Kelly with 17 points, but it was not enough as Franklin & Marshall defeated Immaculata, 72-57, on the opening day of the Terry Greene Tip-Off Classic.

Kelly poured in the team-leading 17 points going 5 of 16 from the field, including 3-for-8 from beyond the arc, and 4 of 6 from the free throw line. Freshman Natalie Ayoub finished with a double-double on 13 points and 13 rebounds. Ayoub was 6-for-11 from the field, and blocked three shots by the Diplomats. Sophomore Annie Kohutka chipped in 12 points as she connected on two three-pointers and was 4-for-4 at the line.
 
Freshman Emily Halloran added six points and six rebounds, while junior Amber Ballinger had seven points and five rebounds, and sophomore Molly Gallagher came down with five rebounds. Kelly, Ballinger, Halloran, and Gallagher all had two assists.
 
Haley Pilone paced Franklin & Marshall (1-0) to the win with 22 points, and Erica Brown recorded a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds, leading the team on the boards.

KEY MOMENTS:
- Immaculata (1-1) scored the game's opening bucket on a layup from Ayoub, but that proved the Mighty Macs only lead of the game as Franklin & Marshall hit a three 40 seconds into the first quarter. Halloran's jumper with 4:14 to play in the first quarter cut Immaculata's deficit to three (12-9), but Franklin & Marshall quickly pushed its lead to eight (17-9). The Mighty Macs ended the first quarter down 22-15.
- Kelly had the first basket of the second quarter bringing Immaculata within five (22-17). However, a 9-0 run from Franklin & Marshall pushed the hosts' lead to 31-17 with 8:15 left before halftime. Immaculata put together a 7-0 spurt later in the quarter that got the Mighty Macs within six, 32-26, with 2:18 remaining in the quarter. Kohutka had the final four points of the run. Kelly than put in a layup with 55 seconds to trim the margin to 33-28, but the Diplomats scored in the closing seconds for the 35-28 halftime lead.
- Franklin & Marshall started the third quarter scoring the first seven points to take a double-figure advantage (42-28). The Diplomats led by as many as 18, and the Mighty Macs were not able to get closed than 14 points during the third quarter. Franklin & Marshall took its largest lead of the game with one minute left (72-51). Immaculata was able to close the gap to 15 (72-57) as the Mighty Macs hit four free throws and Halloran had a jumper to close the game.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Immaculata was 34.5 percent (20-58) the field and 6-for-19 (.316) from three-point range. The Mighty Macs had a strong effort at the line going 11-for-14 (.786).
- Franklin & Marshall was 39.1 percent (27-69) from the field, 5-for-14 (.357) from three, and were just 48.1 percent at the line (13 of 27).

UP NEXT: 
Immaculata plays Stevens in the consolation game of the tip-off classic at 1p.m. on Sunday. Stevens lost to Elizabethtown, 72-63, in the classic's other contest Saturday.
