Women's Basketball's Historic 2025-26 Season Comes to a Close in the NCAA Tournament

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio- The Immaculata women's basketball team faced No. 21 SUNY New Paltz in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Immaculata concluded their Tournament run, falling to SUNY New Paltz 67-51 at the DeCarlo Varsity Center on Friday evening.

The game marked the first-ever meeting between Immaculata and SUNY New Paltz in women's basketball. Despite the loss, Immaculata's third, and second consecutive, appearance in the NCAA Tournament highlighted the program's best season in the NCAA era of Immaculata basketball. Immaculata concludes the season with a 24-4 overall record, capturing its second consecutive Atlantic East Conference Championship (third overall), and completing a 16-0 run through the AEC regular season and conference tournament. The loss snaps the Mighty Macs' NCAA era (1982- present) program record win streak at 16 games.

With the win, SUNY-New Paltz improves to 26-2 overall (17-1 SUNYAC), and will advance to play the winner of the John Carroll and The College of New Jersey First Round game in the second round on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST SUNY NEW PALTZ
  • SUNY New Paltz opened the contest on a strong note, jumping out to an early advantage behind efficient shooting and transition opportunities. The Mighty Macs answered with a pair of transition baskets from Carly Coleman, who kept Immaculata within striking distance during the opening minutes. A three-pointer from the Hawks midway through the period extended their lead, but the Mighty Macs continued to battle on the defensive end and generated several turnovers. Coleman added another late basket in the paint to close the period, but SUNY New Paltz carried a 17–11 lead into the second quarter.
  • Immaculata settled into the game during the second period, receiving contributions from multiple players on the offensive end. A jumper from Riley Cassidy and a midrange basket by Sofia Kouridakis helped the Mighty Macs trim the deficit midway through the quarter. Despite several strong defensive possessions and forcing multiple turnovers, the Hawks capitalized on second-chance opportunities and interior scoring to maintain control. SUNY New Paltz closed the half with steady offense and took a 31-22 lead into the locker room.
  • The Mighty Macs came out aggressively to start the second half. A three-pointer from Olivia Ettorre, followed by a deep shot from Carly Coleman, cut the deficit to 33–30, marking Immaculata's closest margin since the opening minutes. SUNY New Paltz responded with a decisive run fueled by rebounding and transition scoring. The Hawks closed the quarter on a surge that pushed the lead back to double digits, taking a 50–37 advantage into the final period.
  • Immaculata continued to battle throughout the final quarter, highlighted by a three-pointer from Sabrina Little and a driving layup by Coleman. Another triple from Cassidy later in the period trimmed the deficit to single digits briefly.
