Neumann Hands Women's Basketball 53-36 Loss

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata University women's basketball fell at home to visiting Neumann University, 53-36, Wednesday night in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action inside Alumnae Hall.
 
Tamyra Laws recorded her 10th double-double of the season with a team-best 14 points and 10 rebounds. Theresa Walsh led the Mighty Macs on the glass with 13 rebounds to go along with five points and three blocked shots. Amber Ballinger added six points and two steals, while Gina Cocci dished out a team-leading three assists.
 
The first quarter was a close contest as the first 10 minutes ended with the squads tied at 13-apiece. Immaculata held the lead on three occasions, and the score was tied four times. The Mighty Macs got timely three-point field goals by Ballinger and Cocci to hand them their first two leads. Laws' layup with 3:37 to go handed Immaculata its final advantage of the quarter, 10-9.
 
The Mighty Macs (2-11, 2-3 CSAC) scored the first bucket of the second quarter to take a 15-13 lead just 24 seconds into the stanza. The Knights scored six-straight points before Laws put in a layup at the 6:34 mark to trim Neumann's advantage to two points (19-17). Neumann went on a 10-2 run that put the visitors ahead by double-figures for the first time in the game, 29-19, with 2:19 to play before halftime. Erica Kramer and Walsh had baskets during the final 1:30 of the second quarter, but Neumann held its largest lead of the first half at the break, 34-23.
 
Both teams were slow to score during the third quarter as the first points of the stanza came from Immaculata's Mamako Johnson with 5:04 to go in the third. Johnson's basket cut the Knights lead back to single digits, 34-25. Laws followed at the 4:21 mark with a layup further trimming the Mighty Macs deficit to seven (34-27). Neumann scored six-consecutive points to extend its lead to 13 (40-27), and Laws ended the quarter with a jumper that kept Immaculata within 11 (40-29) heading into the final frame.
 
Ballinger and Laws brought the Mighty Macs within nine points of the Knights early in the fourth quarter, but Neumann continued to outscore Immaculata, and the Knights eventually won the game by their largest lead of the night, 53-36.
 
Neumann (8-6, 3-2 CSAC) was led by a double-double from AAliya Hayes with 25 points and 21 rebounds along with six steals.
 
Immaculata head to Clarks Summit on Saturday at 1 p.m. for another CSAC contest.
