Box Score
IMMACULATA, Pa.-On Saturday afternoon at Draper Walsh Stadium, the Mighty Mac women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback to Penn State-Abington in non-conference action.
In a tightly contested first half the Macs seemed to hold an edge as they had possession for the overwhelming majority of the first half as they did a great job maintaining constant pressure on the Lions defense, but were unable to convert. The Macs outshot the Lions by a 9-1 margin in the first 45 minutes including a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Macs would ultimately end the day with a 17-6 shot advantage, and an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal, led by sophomore
Morgan McDonough who took six on the day.
The Macs had numerous opportunities, but the Nittany Lions defense seemed simply impenetrable in the first 45 as they could not get a clean look at the net. Junior goalie
Allie Tracey helped to keep the Macs in the game while she only made one save on the day she successfully came off her line multiple times and stopped the Nittany Lion attack. The score was locked at 0-0 heading into the locker room.
The second half began in promising fashion as the Macs again quickly gained possession and began their attack. They had some chances in the first five minutes of the half, seeing shots skitter wide or be saved by the Lions keeper Samantha Friend who would go on to have eight saves on the day while facing 17 shots. In the 52
nd minute the Nittany Lions got just their second corner of the match and they were able to convert the corner on a volley from Michelle Latronica to Greta Sheridan who would come flying into the box just in time to direct the ball into the net. Freshman goalie
Sarah Roselli, making her second career appearance, played the entire second half for the Macs surrendering just the one goal and making three saves in the half.
Roselli helped to keep the Macs in the game with a leaping save off a free kick in the 80
th minute which nearly paid dividends as the Macs managed to get a few more good looks at the cage in the final few minutes. McDonough nearly scored the equalizer in the 85
th minute, however, it was nullified by an offsides call. After this reversal, the Nittany Lions would successfully burn the final few minutes off the clock, dropping the Macs to 0-2 on the season.
The Macs next home game is Tuesday September 6
th at 4 p.m. when the Delaware Valley University Aggies come to pay the Macs a visit.
