ASTON, Pa.- Immaculata freshman
Layne Kennedy scored the first goal of her career on Wednesday afternoon in the Mighty Macs (5-5, 1-0 CSAC) Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opener at Neumann, and it proved to be the game-winner with 6:19 to go in a 4-3 victory over the Knights (4-5, 0-2 CSAC). The Mighty Macs scored the first two goals of the game before Neumann knocked three straight in to put the Macs in a 3-2 hole, but IU bounced back with the next two goals and held off the Knights for the big conference opening victory.
Kennedy would add her first career assist as well for three points on the day, and junior
Megan Donegan took the team lead in goals with four as she scored two goals to lead IU. It was the second multi-goal game of her career, and she also added an assist for a career-high five points. Junior
Cayla Williams scored her third goal of the season as well.
Senior
Sarah Pasternak came up with 10 big saves in the cage to help IU to the victory.
Donegan put the Mighty Macs on the board with an unassisted goal in the 14
th minute and less than four minutes later, Williams scored on her own rebound to put the Macs up 2-0 midway through the first half.
Neumann would score in the 28
th minute to trim the IU lead in half heading into the locker room.
The Knights controlled the game early in the second half as Chelsea Kulesza would score twice to put Neumann up 3-2 with 25 minutes to go.
The Macs were not going down easily as Donegan scored her second goal of the game on the first career assist from Kennedy in the 58
th minute to tie the game at 3-3.
Donegan would then return the favor to Kennedy in the 64
th minute to give the Mighty Macs the 4-3 victory.
The Macs will host Marywood on Saturday at 1 p.m. searching for their second straight CSAC win.
