Box Score
LA PLUME, Pa.- The Immaculata University baseball team was making their first-ever appearance in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship game on Sunday in need of two wins to claim their first crown in team history, but the No. 2 Mighty Macs (23-21) fell to No. 1 Keystone, 17-7, to end their 2016 season.
Â
The Mighty Macs had a big season, reaching their highest seed in team history and setting a new program record for victories in a season.
Â
In today's contest, the game was close into the fifth inning until Keystone exploded for 10 runs to take an insurmountable lead.
Â
Junior left fielder
Jason McCormick polished off his huge third season by going 3-for-5 with two runs scored, a double, and a triple. He finished the season with 55 runs scored, shattering the previous record of 38, and he fell just one hit shy of the single season team record for hits with 56.
Â
In his final game as a Mighty Mac, senior
Mike Lascomb (2-for-3, 2 R, BB, 2 RBI) had a multi-hit game as did junior designated hitter
Matt Simon (2-for-4, 2 RBI).
Â
Sophomore
Eddie Decker got the ball for IU and worked around trouble in the first inning as the Giants loaded the bases with one out, but a foul out and a strikeout ended the threat. The Giants did cash in during their second inning to take a 2-0 lead early on.
Â
Offensively, the Macs struggled to get going, but finally did in their half of the fourth. Lascomb lined a single to right and he moved to second on a wild pitch. A fly out to left field moved him to third, and junior right fielder
Howie Kalamets (1-for-4, R, RBI, HBP, SB) was then hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners with one out. Simon then dribbled an infield single which scored Lascomb to cut the deficit in half at 2-1 and put runners on the corners again. Following a strikeout, Simon broke for second on a delayed steal and when the throw went to second base, Kalamets swiped home to tie the game at 2-2.
Â
The game did not stay tied for long as Keystone plated the go-ahead run on a wild pitch to lead 3-2 through four innings.
Â
The Macs threatened in the fifth on a two-out double by McCormick and walk by Lascomb, but a fly out to left ended the inning. The Giants then broke out in the fifth with 10 runs to blow the game open at 13-2. They sent 14 hitters to the plate, faced three different pitchers, and had six hits to go with three walks in the big inning.
Â
The score held at 13-2 before the Macs built a comeback effort in the seventh by sending 10 men to the plate. Sophomore second baseman
Brad Misialek (R, BB) walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a single through the left side by senior
Rick DiDomenico (1-for-5). Following a fielder's choice, Lascomb singled through the left side to score Misialek and make it 13-3. A single by junior catcher
Ryan Tecco (1-for-5, R) to center field loaded the bases, which lead to back-to-back RBI singles by Kalamets and Simon, and an RBI walk by senior shortstop
Ryan Ficca (2 BB, RBI) to make it 13-6.
Â
Keystone got the run back in the seventh on a home run to extend the advantage back to 14-6.
Â
McCormick would score the final run of the season for IU in the eighth after tripling to center field and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Lascomb. Keystone finished off the scoring in the game with a three-run home run in the eighth.
