Balanced Effort Carries IU To CSAC Semifinals

IMMACULATA, Pa.- The No. 4 Mighty Macs (8-10) are heading back to their fourth consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Semifinals after a total team effort in a 19-9 victory over visiting No. 5 Centenary (5-11) in the CSAC Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at Draper Walsh Stadium.  IU had eight different goal scorers on the day and assisted on 13 of their tallies with their balanced attack.
 
Sophomore Nicole Dominick had a career day with eight points on four goals and four assists, and added a team-high five groundballs to lead the Mighty Macs.  Sophomore Hannah Verrecchia had a team-high five goals and added one assist, while freshman Amanda Maher had a career-high six points on three goals and three assists.  Sophomores Brittany Whaley (three assists) and Rosemarie Reitman (two assists) each had two goals on the day while senior Shannon Neill, freshman Bailey Krewson, and senior Meredith Katona each had one goal apiece.
 
Neill led the team with three caused turnovers and senior Elizabeth McBride got the win in goal with four saves.
 
The Mighty Macs had a balanced attack from the start as they had five different goal scorers to put them out front early on.  After the Cyclones got on the board first, the Macs ripped off four straight goals in a span of 2:21 to take a lead they would keep for the rest of the game.  Reitman, Maher, Dominick, and Verrecchia each scored to put them up 4-1.
 
Centenary got one back to make it 4-2, but Neill netted one to go up 5-2.  Whaley and Maher each had two assists on the first five goals.
 
Dominick got her second of the game on the helper from Whaley, her third assist of the game, to put the Macs up 6-2.  Centenary scored at the 20:03 mark to bring the game to 6-3.
 
The Macs then went on the attack again with four straight goals from Katona, Dominick, Whaley, and Maher to take a commanding 10-3 lead with 13:49 to go in the half.
 
The Cyclones got their first goal in eight minutes to halt the run, but Verrecchia scored her second and third of the half to put IU up 12-4 heading into the half.
 
The Mighty Macs pulled away in the second half to put the game on ice.  They scored five straight goals from five different goal scorers to take a commanding 17-5 lead.  Maher, Dominick, Whaley, Reitman, and Verrecchia each netted one, while Dominick provided the assist on three of the tallies.
 
Centenary scored one with 20:57 to go, but Verrecchia tied the IU program record with her 59th goal of the season to extend the lead back to 18-6 with 19 minutes remaining.
 
The Cyclones scored three straight over a five minute stretch to trim the IU lead to 18-9, but the Macs ended it with a goal from Krewson, her third of the season, to get to the final of 19-9.
 
The Mighty Macs now shift their focus to making their first ever CSAC Championship game when they travel to No. 1 Cabrini on Wednesday for a CSAC Semifinals matchup.
