Baseball Splits At Marywood, Wins Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SCRANTON, Pa.- After winning the opener on Friday of a three-game weekend Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) series against Marywood (8-11, 1-5 CSAC), the Mighty Macs (16-11) looked to win the series, and they did just that by splitting a Sunday afternoon doubleheader.  IU lost 7-6 in walk-off fashion in extra innings in the first game after seeing a late lead slip away, and they followed that with a 7-2 win in the nightcap to move to 6-3 in the conference.

Junior Jason McCormick became the seventh player to eclipse the 100-hit mark with four total on the day, and senior Nick Campione set a program record with his 52nd career appearance out of the bullpen.

In the opener, the Macs scored right out of the shoot as senior shortstop Ryan Ficca (1-for-4, R) scored on an RBI double off the bat of junior catcher Ryan Tecco (3-for-4, RBI, R, 2 2Bs, SB) to put the Macs in front 1-0 after one half inning.

Junior starter Kenny Anderson retired the first six hitters he faced and put up three shutout innings to keep the Macs in front 1-0 through three.

They extended the lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth as Tecco laced a double down the right field line and stole third before coming home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore third baseman Justin Dempsey (1-for-2, RBI).

The Pacers would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning, and Marywood took the lead themselves for the first time at 3-2 through five innings as they chased Anderson after 4 1/3 innings.  He surrendered five hits and two earned runs while striking out five.

In the top of the sixth, the Macs showed some fight to get the lead back with four runs.  IU loaded the bases with two outs when McCormick (3-for-5, 2 RBIs, R, 2B, SB) laced a single to right field and an error by the right fielder allowed the third run to score to put IU up 5-3.  McCormick would then score on an RBI single by senior first baseman Mike Lascomb (2-for-4, RBI) to give them a three-run advantage.

Junior Kyle Bacher, who got the last two outs in the fifth, tossed a scoreless sixth to send the game to the last inning with the Macs still holding a three-run lead.

However, Marywood would rally immediately with three straight hits and an error that made it 6-5.  A groundout then tied the game at 6-6 against Campione, and he extended the game another inning with a strikeout with the bases loaded.

In the eighth, the Pacers dealt IU their third walk-off CSAC defeat of the season as they won on a walk-off base on balls, 7-6.

In the second game, the IU offense struggled early, but they broke out in a big way late in the game to pull away in a 7-2 victory.  Sophomores Eddie Decker (5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 4 K) and Tyler Sassaman (2 IP, H, 3 K) combined to allow just four hits.

The Pacers scored single runs in the second and third to lead 2-0 through three, and IU would get on the board for the first time in the fourth.

Junior right fielder Howie Kalamets (1-for-4, R, 3B) tripled with one out and scored one hitter later on a sacrifice fly by Dempsey (1-for-3, 3 RBIs).

After Decker had a shutdown bottom of the fourth, the Macs put four on the board in the fifth to take a commanding lead.  McCormick (1-for-4, 2 R, 3B) tripled to lead off and tied the game on a single by Lascomb (1-for-4, RBI, R).  Ficca (2-for-3, RBI, R, 2B) doubled to put two runners in scoring position, and Lascomb scored on a wild pitch to put IU in front for good.  Later in the frame, Dempsey delivered a big two-run single to left to make it 5-2.

Decker would finish his outing in the fifth with another scoreless frame.

In the sixth, IU added two runs on an RBI fielder's choice by Ficca and an error to get the lead to 7-2.

From there, Sassaman shut down the Pacers to close out the victory.

The Macs will return home on Wednesday to host Alvernia at 3:30 p.m.
