Box Score 2 FORT PIERCE, Pa.- The Immaculata baseball team enjoyed a great day at the ballpark as they swept a doubleheader over La Roche College (2-2) by scores of 9-6 and 5-1 to improve to 4-3 on their Florida trip with one doubleheader remaining tomorrow morning against Widener at 9:30 a.m.
Â
On the day, the Mighty Macs got strong efforts on the mound in game one by junior
Kenny Anderson, and the second complete game of the season from senior
Dan Whalen in the nightcap. Offensively, senior
Rick DiDomenico had five hits in the two games, and reached base in all seven plate apperances.
Â
In the opener, senior third baseman
Rob Wallace (3-for-4, RBI, R, 2B) and DiDomenico (3-for-4, 2 R, RBI, 2B) each had three hits, senior shortstop
Ryan Ficca (RBI) had two hits, and senior first baseman
Mike Lascomb chipped in with three RBIs to pace the offense.
Â
The Mighty Macs led much of the way until La Roche tied it in the sixth, but the Macs rallied in their last at bat for the win.
Â
To start the seventh, Wallace continued his hot day with a single to lead off the inning, and moved to second after a walk by junior right fielder
Howie Kalamets (2 R, BB, HBP). Junior catcher
Ryan Tecco then moved them both up a base with a sacrifice bunt, and junior pinch hitter
Dom Ficca broke the tie with an RBI double that scored Wallace and moved Kalamets to third base. The Macs tacked on some insurance with an RBI single by DiDomenico and a sacrifice fly by Lascomb to build their lead up to 9-6.
Â
Senior closer
Nick Campione (2-0), who got the final out of the sixth inning to earn the victory, worked around a two-out double and closed the door for the win. Â
Â
After falling behind early in the last two games, the Mighty Macs had a chance to play with the lead as they scored a pair of runs in the second inning. Junior designated hitter
Matt Simon (1-for-3, 2 R, BB) walked to lead off the inning and was brought home immediately on an RBI double by Wallace on his first hit of the day. Wallace would be caught stealing, but Kalamets was hit by a pitch and would come around to score on an error by the pitcher to put IU up 2-0.
Â
Anderson got off to a great start as he worked around two out trouble in the first, two runners in the second, a leadoff walk in the third, and a hit batter in the fourth to keep La Roche off the scoreboard.
Â
Meanwhile, IU put up single runs in the third and fourth to swell their lead to 4-0. In the third, Simon scored his second run of the game on an error, and in the fourth, Lascomb singled in DiDomenico who led off the frame with a double.
Â
The Redhawks finally got to Anderson in the bottom of the fifth as they capitalized on two IU errors and a passed ball to plate three unearned runs, and trim the Mac lead to one at 4-3.
Â
Immaculata did a good job staying out front in the top of the sixth. Sophomore second baseman
Pat Devenney (1-for-2, R, HBP) was hit by a pitch and after moving to second on a wild pitch, was advanced to third when DiDomenico reached by error. With runners on the corners and one out, Lascomb got his second RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly and
Ryan Ficca delivered an RBI single to increase the lead back to 6-3.
Â
La Roche would chase Anderson from the game in the sixth with three runs as they took advantage of another Mighty Mac miscue to tie the game at 6-6.
Â
Anderson threw well over 5 2/3 innings as he struck out four and allowed just two earned runs (six total) and nine hits.
Â
Whalen (1-1) earned the 11
th win of his career to tie the program record with his second complete game of the season, and sixth of his career, to help IU to the 5-1 win in game two. He allowed just three hits, and one unearned run, while walking four and striking out one.
Â
Simon (2-for-2, R, BB, 2 SB) and DiDomenico (2-for-2, BB, SB) each had two hits for the Macs.
Â
The Macs jumped out front again for the second straight game with three runs in the second inning to go up 3-0. Simon led off with a single, and two hitters later, Kalamets (1-for-3, 3B, RBI, R) tripled to bring home Simon for the first run of the game. Tecco then reached on an error by the pitcher which scored Kalamets, and Tecco would come around to score on a wild pitch.
Â
La Roche had their best chance in the third with runners on the corners and one out, but Whalen induced a 5-4-3 double play to escape trouble. The Redhawks would get on the board in the top of the fifth with one run, but that would be all for the day.
Â
Immaculata added a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Wallace, and another in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from junior leftfielder
Jason McCormick to get to the final of 5-1.
Â
The Macs will wrap up their trip tomorrow with a doubleheader against Widener at 9:30 a.m.
