Box Score LANGHORNE, Pa.- The Mighty Macs got off to a strong start in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play with a 15-1 victory at Cairn on Friday afternoon. Immaculata (8-7, 1-0 CSAC) used a six-run fourth inning to take control of the game and rode an outstanding start by senior
Dan Whalen, who set the school wins record with his 12
th career victory.
Whalen (2-1) went seven innings and surrendered one run while allowing six hits and striking out eight hitters without a walk.
On offense the Mighty Macs combined for 18 hits and, everyone in the starting lineup had at least one hit, with six of them contributing two. Junior leftfielder
Jason McCormick went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs, two doubles, and was hit by two pitches, and senior first baseman
Mike Lascomb hit his second career home run along with a single to go with two runs scored and five RBIs.
McCormick hit his first double of the game to lead off the game and moved to third on a line out before coming in to score on a sacrifice fly by senior shortstop
Ryan Ficca (1-for-5, R, 2 RBIs, SB, 2B). Whalen worked around a one out single to keep IU in front after one.
Each team's starting pitcher held the other offense scoreless through the second and third, but the Mighty Mac offense busted out in the top of the fourth with six runs to take a commanding 7-0 advantage.
Junior right fielder
Howie Kalamets (1-for-5, R, 2 RBIs) reached on a fielder's choice following a single by junior first baseman
Matt Simon (1-for-3, R, 2 BB). Kalamets stole second and advanced to third on a single by junior catcher
Ryan Tecco (2-for-4). Tecco was then thrown out stealing second, but Kalamets scored to extend the advantage to 2-0. Sophomore second baseman
Pat Devenney (2-for-4, R) and sophomore third baseman
Brad Misialek (2-for-4, 2 R) both hit singles to restart the rally, and senior centerfielder
Rick DiDomenico (2-for-3, 3 R, HBP) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. McCormick then delivered the first big swing of the inning with a two-run double before Lascomb put the Mighty Macs comfortably in front with a three-run home run to make it 7-0.
Whalen continued to cruise for the Macs as he shut down the Highlanders in the fourth and fifth.
In the sixth, Lascomb collected his fourth RBI of the game with a single to score DiDomenico, who singled earlier in the inning. With an 8-0 lead, Whalen put up a 1-2-3 inning to send the game to the late innings with IU in command.
Whalen would give up Cairn's only run of the day on a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh, but the Macs answered quickly in the top of the eighth on an RBI fielder's choice by Lascomb, his fifth of the day to put IU up 9-1. Ficca then doubled in DiDomenico for his third run scored of the game out of the nine hole, and the Macs were up 10-1 in the middle of the eighth. The Macs would not stop there as Kalamets hit a two-run single, and Simon came around to score when senior
Chuck Wyckoff was thrown out stealing and the Macs were comfortably in front 13-1.
After Simon threw a scoreless eighth, his first career appearance on the mound, in relief of Whalen, freshman
Tom Prato got the first hit of his career with a two-run single in the top of the ninth to extend the lead to 15-1.
Freshman
Jimmy Dever pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the win.
The Macs will look for a series sweep tomorrow when they host the Highlanders at the IU Baseball Field for a noon doubleheader.
