Box Score 2 IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata baseball team (7-7) opened the IU Baseball Field in fine fashion this weekend as they swept RIT (1-3) in a doubleheader today, 5-1 and 10-5, to take all three games of the weekend set with the visiting Tigers. The Macs had consistent offense all day and got great outings from the bullpen who went eight innings over the weekend, allowing just one run.
In the first game, sophomore
Eddie Decker had a good start and the Mighty Mac bullpen tossed 3 1/3 innings of no-hit ball to close out the seven-inning victory. On offense, the Macs pounded out nine hits led by two apiece by sophomore
Justin Dempsey, junior
Jason McCormick, and senior
Ryan Ficca.
The Macs wasted no time putting together a threat in the bottom of the first, as they loaded the bases with one out on back-to-back hit by pitches by senior first baseman
Mike Lascomb (1-for-3, 2 R, SB, HBP RBI) and Ficca (2-for-2, R, RBI, SB, HBP, 2B), and an infield single by junior designated hitter
Matt Simon (1-for-3). Following a strikeout, Dempsey (2-for-3, 2 RBIs) delivered a two-run single to right field to put IU up 2-0 through one inning.
After Decker put up his second straight shutout inning with four strikeouts, the Macs added to their lead with a two-out RBI single by McCormick (2-for-4, RBI, SB, 2B) to score sophomore third baseman
Brad Misialek (1-for-3, R), who hit a one-out infield single, to make it 3-0 Macs.
The Tigers got their first runner into scoring position with one out in the third, but McCormick made a sliding catch in left center field and doubled off the runner at second to end the threat. In the Macs' half of the inning, Ficca singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, and stole third, but was cut down at the plate attempting to score on a wild pitch and IU was unable to build their lead.
In the fourth, RIT finally broke through and scored a run after back-to-back hits, and they chased Decker as they put two runners on with two outs, but just like yesterday, junior reliever
Kyle Bacher retired the next hitter on a pop out to end the threat with IU leading 3-1.
Decker went 3 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and one run while striking out a career-high seven hitters.
The Mighty Mac offense responded to the first Tiger run of the day with two of their own. DiDomenico was hit by a pitch and stole second. Lascomb then delivered an RBI single up the middle, and after stealing second himself, Ficca doubled him home to put the IU lead at its largest of the day, 5-1. The hit for Lascomb gave him 102 for his career as he became the 6
th Mighty Mac in program history to eclipse 100 hits.
Bacher (1-0), who earned his first career win with 2/3 an inning of shutout work, retired the first hitter of the inning before giving way to junior
Ryan Blough. Blough induced a 4-6-3 double play ball to end the fifth, and got another double play, the third of the game for the Macs, from Devenney at second base to end the sixth.
Blough would close out the game as he went 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief to seal the 5-1 victory for the Macs.
In the second game, a nine-inning contest, junior
Kenny Anderson got the ball and cruised through the first two innings before the Tigers got to him for a run on a bloop single in the top of the third. However, Immaculata broke out in the bottom of the inning with four runs with two outs to take the lead.
DiDomenico (2-for-4, R) singled up the middle to lead off the frame, and following two outs, Ficca (1-for-4, R, RBI, BB) walked to put two on. Simon (2-for-3, R, SB) then laced his second single of the game to tie it up and put runners on the corners. Junior right fielder
Howie Kalamets (1-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, 3B, BB) delivered the big swing of the inning with a triple to left-center field, and he would come in to score on a double steal after junior catcher
Ryan Tecco (1-for-2, R, RBI, BB) walked to put IU on top 4-1.
The Tigers would respond with two runs in the fourth as Anderson had to escape trouble to minimize the damage, but RIT would hit their second home run of the weekend to lead off the top of the fifth and tie the game at 4-4.
Anderson (1-0) would go five innings and give up eight hits and four runs while striking out and walking two, but he would earn the win as IU re-took a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way. McCormick (1-for-5, R) singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, and to third on a fly out to put him 90 feet away with one out. Ficca then hit a ball back to the pitcher, and he attempted to tag McCormick between third and home, but missed and the Macs went in front 5-4.
Sophomore
Trevor O'Brien tossed a perfect sixth, and the Macs added another in the bottom of the frame on an RBI infield single by Misialek (1-for-4, RBI) to score Tecco who doubled with one out to give them some insurance at 6-4.
O'Brien tossed another perfect one in the seventh to continue some great bullpen work for the Mighty Macs over the weekend, and as they did in the sixth, IU added to their lead. Immaculata loaded the bases with one out and Tecco was hit by a pitch to bring in a run. Senior left fielder
Chuck Wyckoff then laid down a perfect bunt on a suicide squeeze, and the Tigers made an error on the play allowing two runs to score and bringing the IU lead to 9-4. The Macs scored all three runs without the benefit of a hit as they took advantage of two walks and two hit batters.
O'Brien surrendered one run with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the eighth to end a string of 6 1/3 shutout frames from the IU bullpen, but he escaped further damage with a pair of strikeouts to keep the Macs comfortably in front, 9-5.
The Macs got great work out of the sophomore reliever as he went three innings, struck out four and allowed just one run. Immaculata would add a run when Lascomb singled, stole second, and came around to score on errors.
Senior
Nick Campione came on to close out the 10-5 win for the Mighty Macs as they swept the Tigers in the doubleheader and the three-game weekend set.
The Macs will travel to Haverford on Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game looking for their fourth straight win.
