Box Score 2 FORT PIERCE, Fla.- The Mighty Mac baseball team played a doubleheader on Monday against Elizabethtown (2-2), and after dropping the first game 7-1, the Mighty Macs (2-3) won a wild back-and-forth affair in come-from-behind fashion, 13-12, on a walk-off extra innings home run by junior right fielder
Howie Kalamets.
Â
In the opener, the Mighty Macs put 10 hits on the board, but were unable to string together any sort of rally. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays batted around in the first inning and put five runs on the board, and the Mighty Macs were unable to recover. Senior first baseman
Mike Lascomb (2-for-3, 2B, HBP, SB) and senior
Ryan Ficca (2-for-4, RBI, SB) led the way with two hits apiece.
Â
Junior
Ryan Blough (0-1) got the start, and Elizabethtown got a two-run single and a three-run triple in the first seven batters to build their lead up to 5-0. They threatened to add more, but the Macs cut down two runs at the plate to keep the deficit at five.
Â
Elizabethtown added another run in the second to take a 6-0 lead.
Â
Offensively, the Mighty Macs had runners on base in all but one inning, but had just single hits in the first three innings to stay down 6-0 through four.
Â
Blough settled down and didn't allow any more runs in the third and fourth before giving way to junior
Kyle Bacher. Blough went four innings and gave up six runs while striking out three.
Â
The Macs had a two-out single by sophomore pinch hitter
Justin Dempsey in the top of the fifth, followed by a walk by sophomore designated hitter
Coleman Richards (1-for-2, BB), but junior left fielder
Jason McCormick flew out to end the threat.
Â
The Blue Jays scored a run off of Bacher in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-0, and the Macs built up another threat in the top of the sixth. Lascomb singled to lead off the frame, but was thrown out at second trying to stretch it to a double.Â
Ryan Ficca then singled and stole second before moving to third on a single by senior third baseman
Rob Wallace, but a strikeout and fly out ended the inning.
Â
IU got on the board in the seventh as they loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh on a single by junior
Dom Ficca, a single by junior
Matt Simon, and Lascomb reaching on a hit batter.Â
Ryan Ficca brought home his brother with a single, but a fielder's choice ended the opener with Elizabethtown winning 7-1.
Â
In the second game, the Mighty Macs pounded out 13 hits and stole 10 bases in the contest led by a huge day from Kalamets who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, four RBIs, two stolen bases, a triple, and the walk-off home run. Senior centerfielder
Rick DiDomenico had three hits and three runs scored while McCormick (2-for-3, 2B, 2 SB, 3 R, 2 BB), Lascomb (2-for-4, 3 R, BB, SB), and
Ryan Ficca (2-for-5, R, 3 RBIs) all had multi-hit games. The top three of McCormick, Lascomb, and Ficca combined to go 6-for-12 with seven runs scored to propel the offense.
Â
The Mighty Macs had to use a huge, late-inning comeback to even send the game to extra innings. Trailing 12-7 heading to the bottom of the sixth, McCormick walked, Lascomb singled, and
Ryan Ficca singled to load the bases with nobody out. After a strikeout, DiDomenico singled home the first run of the inning to cut the deficit to 12-8. Following two wild pitches to score Ficca and Lascomb, Kalamets hit a sacrifice fly to bring home DiDomenico to make it 12-11.
Â
After sophomore reliever
Trevor O'Brien retired the Blue Jays in the top of the seventh, IU needed another rally in the bottom of the frame. McCormick led off with a walk and moved to third on a single by Lascomb to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Following a strikeout,
Rob Wallace delivered an RBI groundout to tie the game and send it to extras.
Â
O'Brien then put up another zero for the Mighty Macs on the mound, and Kalamets sent the first pitch of the bottom of the eighth over the left field fence to give the Mighty Macs an improbable 13-12 win on his fifth career home run.
Â
IU got off to a 5-0 lead after one inning after an RBI groundout by
Ryan Ficca, a two-run triple by Kalamets and an RBI single by
Dom Ficca. The Blue Jays responded with four in the second, but IU got the lead back to two runs with an RBI single by
Ryan Ficca in the bottom of the frame.
Â
The Blue Jays chased junior starter
Kenny Anderson from the game after the second and scored two runs against freshman
Brandon Shapiro to tie the game. Elizabethtown would take the lead with another run in the fourth against freshman
Eddie Decker to take the lead, 7-6.
Â
The Mighty Macs tied the game, 7-7, in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI groundout by catcher
Justin Dempsey.
Â
Elizabethtown seemed to put the game out of reach in the sixth with five runs, but the Mighty Macs used late heroics to split the doubleheader.
Â
The Mighty Macs will play Elizabethtown in one more game tomorrow at 2 p.m.
