Reilly Larkin sunk two free throws with four seconds remaining in the contest, and the Mighty Macs' defense didn't allow the Defenders a good look at a final shot as visiting Immaculata defeated Summit, 45-43, in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) women's basketball contest Saturday afternoon.
Leading by three (33-30) heading into the fourth quarter, Immaculata (7-16, 7-7 CSAC) held the lead for the first five minutes of the period despite Summit trimming the Mighty Macs' advantage to just one point on two occasions. The Defenders (4-15, 2-12 CSAC) got within on for the third time with 5:50 to play, and at the 4:44 mark, Summit knocked down two free throws to retake the lead, 40-39.
Both squads would be held scoreless for the next 2:20 of the contest before
Tamyra Laws put in a layup that put the Mighty Macs back on top by one (41-40). The Defenders would tie the contest at 41-all and later 43-all on free throws. It was however, Immaculata's pair of free throws that won the game with four seconds remaining.
Immaculata was near perfect at the line for the contest, going 11-for-12 (91.7%). It was the best single-game free throw percentage this season for the Mighty Macs. Larkin and
Theresa Walsh led the way at the charity stripe with 4-for-4 performances, and
Tess Kieffer was 2-for-2.
Larkin had a team-best 14 points while grabbing two rebounds and making two steals. Walsh accounted for 10 points, eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals. Laws was the leader on the glass with 10 rebounds and nine points.
The Mighty Macs trailed the Defenders by three (24-21) at the break, and Summit opened the third period sinking three free throws as Carissa Erdman was fouled on a 3-point shot. Immaculata started its run at the 8:49 mark as Walsh made two free throws, and she had a jumper with 6:36 to go that make it a two-point game.
Gina Cocci then put up a layup to tie the contest at 27-27 at the 5:43 mark, and Kieffer's layup with 3:20 to play in the third period gave the Macs the edge, 29-27. Summit did not get their first points from the field during the third period until 1:18 remaining in the frame as Immaculata outscored the hosts, 12-6.
The Defenders started the game on a 6-0 run, and led the entire opening period. Summit built a 10-point advantage, 14-4, with 3:33 to play in the first quarter before Larkin scored the final four points for Immaculata, and trailed by eight, 16-8, going into the second period.
The Mighty Macs cut their deficit to two (18-16) by the 6:15 mark of the second quarter, but were not able to even the game. Summit extended its lead back to six before taking the 24-21 advantage into the halftime locker room.
Immaculata heads to Neumann on Wednesday evening, Feb. 17, for a 6 p.m. contest.
