IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata women's basketball team opened Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Alumnae Hall as they welcomed the Centenary University Cyclones (5-1, 2-0 CSAC), but the Mighty Macs (0-6, 0-1 CSAC) struggled early on and were unable to recover in a 70-49 defeat. Tamyra Laws led the way for IU with 10 points while adding seven boards, and senior
Theresa Walsh had eight points and a team-best nine rebounds.
Sophomore
Amber Ballinger contributed eight points off the bench and freshman
Annie Kohutka scored nine points, all in the first half.
As a team, the Mighty Macs shot 16-for-59 (27.1%) from the floor.
The Macs were slow to get going as they fell behind 8-2 a few minutes into the game with the only basket coming from a Walsh jumper. The Macs would cut it two three on two occasions, both on baskets by Kohutka, but the Cyclones went on a 12-3 run to open up a 12-point lead at 22-10 with 1:43 to go before the end of the first quarter.
Laws scored five straight points for IU, but Centenary took an 11-point lead to the second quarter at 26-15.
The Macs stayed in the game with a three-pointer from senior
Gina Cocci (four assists) and later a free throw by Walsh to make it 35-24, but a low-scoring quarter sent the game to the locker room at 35-24.
The Cyclones put the game away in the third quarter as they outscored IU 16-6 over the 10-minute stretch to build a 21-point advantage.
Centenary started the fourth quarter by building up a 29-point advantage, but the Macs fought back behind eight fourth quarter points from Ballinger, but were unable to get any closer in a 70-49 defeat.
The Macs will shift back to non-conference play for three more games, starting with Moravian on Wednesday, December 7
th at 6 p.m. at Alumnae Hall.
