IMMACULATA, Pa.- After nine days off, the Immaculata women's basketball team returned to action when they hosted Washington College (5-5) at Alumnae Hall, and in a tight game the whole way, the Shorewomen pulled away for the 74-61 victory. The Mighty Macs (0-9) will now be off until January 3
rd when they return to Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play at Rosemont.
Senior
Tamyra Laws led the way with 21 points and a career-high six blocks with five rebounds. Freshman
Amber Ballinger had a career-high 15 points with seven rebounds, freshman
Annie Kohutka had 12 points and a team-high eight boards, and junior
Gina Cocci had nine points and a team-best four assists.
The Macs were strong from the free throw line as they went 18-for-22 (81.8%).
IU had a great start to the game as they raced out to a 6-0 lead 3:43 into the contest. Ballinger hit a lay-up, Kohutka knocked down a pair of free throws, and Laws hit a lay-up to put them up by six early. After Washington College scored five straight, Kohutka knocked down a three from the wing to put them back up 9-5 midway through the quarter.
The Shorewomen went up for the first time and had a 16-13 lead in the closing seconds of the quarter when Ballinger knocked down a triple as time expired to tie the game at 16-16.
The game was tied again later at 20-20 when Washington went on a quick 5-0 spurt, but the Macs whittled it back down to one after Kohutka hit three free throws. Washington College went on an 8-0 run to swell the lead to nine, but three straight from the Macs trimmed the deficit to 36-30 at the break.
Ballinger knocked down a triple in their first possession after halftime to trim the deficit to three points, and later it would get down to four, but the Shorewomen would take control of the quarter and go up 55-44 at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Mighty Macs got down to seven points on a Laws bucket with 59 seconds to go, but Washington College iced the game away at the free throw line in the 74-61 outcome.
