IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Immaculata University men's soccer team set the program mark for most conference wins in a season as the Mighty Macs posted a 7-2 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) record to snag the second seed and quarterfinal bye in the CSAC Tournament. The Mighty Macs will play their first contest of the tournament on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m.
Â
Immaculata, which finished with an identical record to Cabrini, won the tiebreaker with the Mighty Macs' 1-0 win against the Cavaliers earlier in the season to clinch the higher seed. The Mighty Macs host those same Cavaliers on Thursday night, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. at Draper Walsh Stadium. Third-seeded Cabrini defeated sixth-seed Gwynedd Mercy, 3-0, on Tuesday, Nov. 1, in the quarterfinal round of the CSAC Tournament to advance to take on Immaculata.
Â
The 2016 season marks the sixth time in the 12 years of the program that Immaculata has advanced to the conference playoffs, and it's the second-straight year the Mighty Macs have played a home game. The Mighty Macs have not earned the second-seed in the postseason since the 2008 season, where they loss in that semifinal to third-seeded Neumann. Immaculata has played in two conference semifinals in program history, and are 1-1 in those contests. Immaculata and Cabrini have met twice in postseason, and the Cavaliers have defeated the Mighty Macs both times. The last postseason meeting between the two squads was in the 2012 quarterfinals, and the squad also played in the title game during 2009.
Â
Immaculata (12-5-1) already defeated Cabrini (11-6-1, 7-2 CSAC) once this season at DWS as the Mighty Macs used a 54th-minute goal from
Kyle Jumalon and 12 saves and the shutout by
Joe Lubonski for a 1-0 win against the Cavaliers on Oct. 18.
Â
The 2016 campaign has produced the most wins in the program history as Immaculata has reached 12 wins for the first time. The Mighty Macs have also won their last seven contests at DWS, breaking the previous Immaculata record.
Â
Cabrini is making its 10th-consecutive conference postseason appearance, and the Cavaliers are the defending CSAC champions after winning the league title during the 2015 season. Cabrini's 10-year run also includes the league crown during the 2012, 2009 and 2008 seasons.
Â
Sophomore First Team All-CSAC selection
Alex Noel and freshman Honorable Mention All-CSAC pick
Nick Boule lead the Mighty Macs in scoring with nine goals apiece. Noel has chipped in 12 assists to lead the team with 30 points on the season. Boule has added three assists of his own for 21 points on the year. Senior Honorable Mention selection Jumalon has added seven goals, including the game winner from Immaculata's regular-season meeting with Cabrini, as well as three assists for 17 points.
Â
Noel is third in the CSAC with 1.67 points per game, tied for fifth in the conference in goals with nine and leading the conference with 12 assists so far this season. Boule is also tied for fifth in the conference with his nine goals so far this season.
Â
Senior Second Team All-CSAC goalkeeper
Joe Lubonski started all 18 contests for Immaculata this season playing to an 83.3 percent save percentage, and 1.15 goals against average. Lubonski is also second in the conference with six shutouts this season trailing only Cabrini's goalie C.J. Serratore, who has eight for the season.
Â
The Cavaliers have been led by CSAC Player of the Year senior A.J. Bishop who has a CSAC leading 17 goals and six assists on the season which is good for 40 points, also tops in the league. Senior Bobby Kane has also chipped in seven goals and two assists for 16 points.
In the other semifinal contest, No. 1 Centenary University hosts No. 5-seed Neumann University at 2 p.m.
The winners of Thursday's two semifinal contests will play in the Colonial States Athletic Conference championship game, which will be held on Saturday, November 5, at the highest remaining seed. The winner of that championship game receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
