Mighty Macs Fall Late At Home To Cairn, 63-58

Box Score

IMMACULATA, Pa.- In their first home contest in over a month, the Immaculata women's basketball team (2-9, 2-2 CSAC) hosted Cairn (2-7, 2-1 CSAC) in a game that featured 10 ties and 12 lead changes, but the Highlanders took control at the end of the game, holding the Macs scoreless for the final 3:07 in an eventual 63-58 CSAC defeat.  The loss evens the Mighty Macs conference mark at 2-2.

Senior Reilly Larkin (4 assists, 4 rebounds) and sophomore Gina Cocci (3 assists, 6 rebounds) led the squad with 15 points apiece, while junior newcomer Tamyra Laws led the Macs on the glass with 13 boards to go with eight points in her Immaculata debut.  Sophomore Theresa Walsh had a solid game with nine points and eight rebounds, while freshman Dia Veneziano also chipped in with eight points and five boards.

As a team, the Mighty Macs turned the ball over a season-low 12 times, but shot just 26.8% (19-for-71) from the field in the defeat.

Immaculata entered the fourth quarter trailing the Highlanders 48-46, but they ripped off a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the game.  Cocci started it with back-to-back three pointers, and Laws knocked down a free throw to put IU up 53-48 with 8:12 remaining.  The Highlanders would respond with a pair of buckets to make it a one-point game before both teams went cold from the field.  Cocci ended that with a lay-up after a great feed from Larkin to stake the Macs to a 55-52 lead with 4:32 to go.

However, the Highlanders came down and buried a three pointer to tie the game at 55-55 with four minutes remaining.

Junior Tess Keiffer then got in the act as she converted a traditional three-point play with 3:07 to go, but again, Cairn had a response with a three-pointer to tie the game for the 10th time at 58-58.  From there, the Mighty Macs would go 0-for-8 from the field and 0-for-2 from the line as they were unable to produce late points.

The Highlanders took the lead on a lay-up at the 1:41 mark, and following a Larkin missed lay-up, she stole the ball coming up, but was unable to convert at the rim and the deficit remained at two.

The Highlanders would knock down three free throws down the stretch to claim the CSAC contest, 63-58.

The first quarter got off to a quick start with IU leading 11-6 midway through after a Larkin triple, but Cairn would put together a 12-0 run that went from the end of the first quarter through to the 9:35 mark of the second quarter that saw CU pull in front 18-11.

The lead would grow as large as eight at 23-15 for Cairn, but the Macs battled back to tie the game at 25-25 at the 1:43 mark with a 10-2 run.  Larkin had seven of the 10 points with Cocci knocking down a three to put IU back in the contest.  The Macs would lead 30-28 at the break with Larkin scoring the final 12 of the first half.

Neither team had larger than a five-point lead in the third quarter and the Highlanders took the two-point lead to the fourth quarter.

Immaculata will stay home this Saturday to host Centenary at 1 p.m.
