Men's Soccer Edged By Washington College, 1-0

Box Score IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Mighty Mac men's soccer team was looking to bounce back from a tough double overtime defeat to Albright in their season opener when they hosted Washington College on Friday afternoon at Draper Walsh Stadium, but a 76th minute goal by the Shoremen (2-0) proved to be the difference in a 1-0 defeat of the Mighty Macs (0-2).

In the first half, the Shoremen outshot the Mighty Macs 13-3, but IU was kept in the game by junior goalie Joe Lubonski (11 saves) with a couple of nice saves.  The Macs had a chance late in the half, but the Washington defense swept away the effort to send the game to half scoreless.

In the second half, the Mighty Mac pressure was much more effective as they generated several chances with a chance to take the lead, but the Shoremen defense held strong to keep the Macs off the scoreboard.  Off a free kick effort, the Mighty Macs found an open man on the far post, but junior Pat Friend was unable to get a clean strike on the ball.

After Lubonski and the defense continued to hold, Washington converted on a corner kick in what proved to be the decisive goal.  Michael Holowesko leapt over the Mighty Mac defense and got a head on a well-fed corner by Dimitri Kaliakin that beat Lubonski for a 1-0 Shoremen lead with just under 15 minutes remaining.

The Macs continued to battle as they generated a few solid chances, including one on a header by Friend, but the Washington defense would hold and deal the Mighty Macs a 1-0 non-conference defeat.

Immaculata finished with 12 shots in the loss.

IU will play their third straight home game on Wednesday, September 9th when they host Moravian at 4 p.m. at Draper Walsh Stadium.
