Box Score IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking loss in their 2015 season opener on Tuesday night at Draper Walsh Stadium as they fell to Albright, 2-1, in double overtime as the Lions (1-0) scored the game-winner with 52 seconds left in the second extra period.
Â
Earlier in the second overtime period, juniors
Stephen Smith and
Kyle Jumalon both had great chances to give the Mighty Macs (0-1) the victory, but Albright goalie Austin Aldinger made two of his 11 saves to keep the game tied. At the other end, junior
Joe Lubonski made an outstanding diving stop, one of three on the evening for him, to preserve the 1-1 game midway through the second extra session.
Â
With a minute to go, the Lions pushed the ball forward and after the ball deflected around in the box, Pierre Lawrence found the loose ball and deposited it in the back of the net for the 2-1 Albright victory.
Â
The Mighty Macs outshot the Lions, 20-15, led by five off the foot of Jumalon and three more from junior
Matt Dunn.
Â
The Macs got on the board first in the 22
nd minute off of a corner kick. Smith had a chance that was blocked off by a defender, and the ball deflected out 30 yards to Dunn who sent a perfect pass into the middle that junior
Pat Friend headed into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Â
Albright would respond just under 10 minutes later on a goal by Peter Bockarie after a perfect feed along the end line by Austin Phillips to tie the game 1-1.
Â
The game would remain tied in the second half and the first overtime with both teams generating chances before the Lions ended it with 52 seconds to go.
Â
The Mighty Macs will look to bounce back from the tough defeat when they host Washington College at Draper Walsh Stadium at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
