Immaculata Bounces Back With 17-5 Win Over Centenary

Box Score

IMMACULATA, Pa.- After taking a loss at Cabrini in their final game before the Easter holiday, the Mighty Macs returned to action on Wednesday night when they hosted Centenary (1-6, 1-5 CSAC) and the Macs (6-5, 4-2 CSAC) bounced back with a 17-5 victory over the Cyclones.  IU had a balanced scoring effort with eight different players finding the back of the net.

Freshman Hannah Verrecchia had four goals and five points overall, and junior Allison Jakavick also scored four times.  Junior Kelly Lapp had five points with two goals and three assists, while senior Alyssa Petito also had three assists and added one goal.  Sophomore Carleigh Dabritz and senior Danielle Lopez each scored twice, and junior Shannon Neill (two assists) and freshman Rosemarie Reitman (one assist) added one goal apiece.

Senior Sam Bonvetti had a solid overall game with two assists, and she tied freshman Brittany Whaley for the team lead in groundballs with five and caused turnovers with seven.

The Mighty Macs used three goals in the first 84 seconds of the game to seize control early.  Petito, who became the 10th Mighty Mac in program history to eclipse 100 points, scored just 23 seconds in on an assist from Bonvetti.  Lopez then scored back-to-back goals 18 seconds apart to put IU up 3-0.

The Macs didn't stop there as they went on to score five consecutive goals to go up 8-0 just over 10 minutes into the game.  Verrecchia sandwiched two goals around one from Lapp before Jakavick had back-to-back tallies to swell the IU advantage to eight.

After the Cyclones scored their first goal of the game, Verrecchia added her third of the half, and Jakavick did the same before Neill finished off the first half scoring for IU with the Macs in front 11-1.  Centenary would score two in the last minute of the first half to send the game to halftime with Immaculata holding an 11-3 advantage.

The Macs halted any chance of a Centenary comeback by scoring the first three goals of the half and keeping them off the scoreboard for 10:47.  Jakavick and Verrecchia each scored their fourth of the game, and Reitman added her only tally of the night to grow the lead to 14-3.

The Cyclones scored twice, but Dabritz would net a pair of goals along with one from Lapp to close out the scoring and a 17-5 victory.

IU will look to take the momentum into Saturday's game at Keystone when they will face the Giants in the first ever women's lacrosse game between the two schools at 1 p.m.

NOTES: Lopez has now scored the second most goals in program history with 143.
