Box Score 2 LA PLUME, Pa.- Looking to bounce back and remain in first place atop the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) standings with one weekend remaining in the regular season, the Immaculata baseball team travelled to Keystone for a doubleheader, but the Mighty Mac (16-12, 10-5 CSAC) offense mustered just eight hits and one run in the doubleheader as Keystone (24-11, 10-5 CSAC) swept Immaculata by scores of 9-1 and 1-0. Heading into the final CSAC weekend of the season, the Mighty Macs are tied at 10-5 in first place with Marywood and Keystone.
In game one, the Mighty Macs were shut down by Keystone ace Felix Baez as they managed five hits in the opener. Junior
Mike Campisano (1-1) took the loss for the Mighty Macs on the mound going three innings and giving up five runs.
The game was scoreless through two innings as Campisano worked around some trouble early on. In the third inning, senior designated hitter
Matt Lawson (1-for-2) singled to lead off the inning. Following a pair of outs, junior shortstop
Ryan Ficca (1-for-2, RBI) singled to left center field and Lawson attempted to score all the way from first to give the Macs a 1-0 lead, but he was gunned down to keep the game scoreless.
The Giants rode the momentum from that play and hung five runs on the board on the strength of six hits and a walk as they sent 10 hitters to the plate.
They would add two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to grow their lead against sophomore reliever
Adam Wheatley.
The Mighty Macs would get a run in the sixth as sophomore right fielder
Howie Kalamets (1-for-2, R, 3B) tripled to right center field to lead off the inning and was brought home on a sacrifice fly by Ficca to make it 7-1, but two Giant runs in the sixth put the game away at 9-1.
In the second game, Immaculata got a great effort on the mound as freshman
Trevor O'Brien, sophomore
Kenny Anderson, and junior
Nick Campione combined to give up just one run and four hits over six innings, but the Mighty Macs were unable to plate a run as they were shut out for the first time all season.
The Mighty Macs may have had their best chance in the second inning when junior first baseman
Mike Lascomb (HBP, BB) was hit by a pitch with one out and moved to second on a single by freshman left fielder
Coleman Richards (1-for-3). Lawson (1-for-3) then laced a ball, but the shortstop snared it and doubled off Richards to end the threat.
O'Brien got Immaculata off to a good start, going two innings and keeping the Giants off the scoreboard.
The Macs threatened again in the fourth as
Ryan Ficca (1-for-3, 2B) doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a one-out groundout, but he would get caught in a run down attempting to steal a run to end the inning.
Anderson, who entered in the third, ran into some trouble in his final inning of work. In the bottom of the fifth, the Giants got a lead off single and sacrificed him to second before Julian Lanfranco brought him home for an RBI single and 1-0 Keystone advantage.
The Mighty Macs would threaten again in the seventh as Lawson reached with a two out single before freshman pinch runner
Adam Connor swiped second to put the tying run in scoring position, but sophomore pinch hitter
Dom Ficca went down on strikes to end the 1-0 contest.
Immaculata will look to get back to their winning ways this coming weekend when they face Marywood in a crucial three-game series. With a win, or one Gwynedd Mercy loss, the Mighty Macs will lock up a playoff berth and still have the opportunity to be the top seed in the conference depending on next week's results.
