Box Score 2 BRIDGEWATER, N.J.- The Immaculata University baseball team tied a program-record by winning their ninth consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) game on Saturday afternoon as they swept Centenary (13-13, 5-10 CSAC) at TD Bank Ballpark by scores of 5-3 and 17-6. The Mighty Macs (16-8, 10-2 CSAC) scored four runs in their final at bat to come back and win the first game, before pounding out 20 hits and pulling away late in game two for their eighth straight win overall.
Sophomore left fielder
Jason McCormick had a huge day for the Mighty Macs going 6-for-7 with three runs scored, four RBIs and the first home run of his career. He finished the series with eight hits, including a double, triple and home run.
Junior third baseman
Rob Wallace also made some history as he became the fifth player in Immaculata history to reach 100 career hits with a first inning single in the opener.
In the first game, the Immaculata offense struggled in the middle innings, but came alive late to deliver a crucial victory. Outside of McCormick's solo home run to open up the game, the Mighty Macs had just two hits in the second through sixth innings and Centenary took a 3-1 lead into the seventh.
With two outs and nobody on base, Immaculata dug deep and had five straight hitters reach to plate four runs. Senior designated hitter
Matt Lawson (1-for-3, R, SB) singled to right and freshman right fielder
Coleman Richards (R, BB) walked before a double steal put both runners in scoring position. Junior
Mike Lascomb (1-for-3, R, 2 RBIs) then delivered a big game-tying two run single as the Macs knotted it at 3-3. Sophomore catcher
Ryan Tecco (R, BB) walked which brought sophomore pinch hitter
Dom Ficca to the plate and for the second straight day, he delivered the go-ahead hit with a two-run triple to left field to stake IU to a 5-3 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore
Kenny Anderson allowed two singles to lead off the inning, but induced a crucial double play before a strikeout to give him his third save of the season.
Freshman
Trevor O'Brien got the start and threw well going 4 1/3 innings and allowing just two hits and one run while striking out three. Freshman
Tyler Sassaman retired the only three hitters he faced in relief, and sophomore
Adam Wheatley (2-1) got the win despite allowing two runs.
In game two, the Mighty Macs rode the momentum from the first game and pulled away late for the 17-6 victory. McCormick went 4-for-5 with two stolen bases, three RBIs and two runs scored and junior shortstop
Ryan Ficca had three hits, a double and two RBIs. Wallace (2-for-2, 4 R, HBP, 2 BB, 2 SB), junior centerfielder
Rick DiDomenico (2-for-5, 2 R, 2B, SB), Lawson (2-for-3, 3 RBIs), junior
Chuck Wyckoff (2-for-2, 2 R, 2 RBIs), and Lascomb (2-for-2, 2 R, 2 RBIs, 2B) each had two hits in the win.
Freshman
Tyler Sassaman got the first win of his career with 1 1/3 innings of shutout relief, and sophomore
Kyle Bacher and junior
Nick Campione delivered shutout innings to close out the win.
McCormick made things happen again to start the first inning as he singled, stole second, stole third and the catcher's throw sailed away to score the first run. Wallace then walked with two outs and stole second before Lawson brought him in with an RBI single for an early 2-0 lead.
Junior starter
Mike Campisano put up two scoreless innings in the first and second and the Mighty Mac offense erupted for a five-run inning in the third to make it 7-0.
DiDomenico doubled to lead off the inning and following a single and stolen base by Wallace to put two runners in scoring position, Lawson hit a sacrifice fly to bring one in. Following a strikeout, Lascomb brought Wallace home with a single to make it 4-0. After two walks to load the bases, McCormick continued his torrid day with a two-run single and
Ryan Ficca hit an RBI single to make it 7-0.
Centenary fought back in the fourth with a six-run inning to chase Campisano and make it 7-6 through four.
Sassaman settled things in the fifth with a scoreless frame and the Macs extended their lead in the sixth with three runs. Wyckoff hit a two-run single to right and Tecco (1-for-2, R, 2 RBIs) hit an RBI single to left to extend it to 10-6.
After Bacher's scoreless sixth, Immaculata broke out for seven runs in the seventh to put the game away.
Ryan Ficca hit an RBI double to score McCormick who singled to start the inning for the first run. After a strikeout, Wallace walked to put two runners on with one out. Lawson then delivered his third RBI of the game with a single to right to make it 12-6. Wyckoff then had a bunt single and a bases loaded walk to Lascomb made it 13-6. Tecco then reached on a two-base error to score two runs and sophomore pinch hitter
Matt Simon delivered an RBI single to right to put the lead at 10. McCormick then finished off his great day and series with an RBI single to right to make it 17-6.
Campione closed out the win for the ninth straight CSAC win to keep IU in first place alone.
Immaculata will now try to make it nine straight wins overall with a road trip to Widener on Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. game.
