Box Score IMMACULATA, Pa.- Celebrating Senior Night for six players on the women's lacrosse team, Immaculata (9-6, 6-2 CSAC) had a shutdown defensive effort and picked up a big 9-4 victory over visiting Marywood (7-6, 6-2 CSAC). With the victory, the Macs have secured a home game in the CSAC Quarterfinals for the third consecutive season and will have a chance to clinch the No. 3 seed for the first time in program history with a win in their season finale on Saturday at Cedar Crest.
Prior to the game, the Mighty Macs honored seniors
Alyssa Petito,
Mackie Fitzgerald,
Danielle Lopez and
Sam Bonvetti, and juniors
Allison Jakavick and
Kelly Lapp, who were all playing in their final regular season game at Draper Walsh Stadium.
The Mighty Macs had contributions from all over the field, but Lopez was the offensive star with four goals and two assists for six points, which pushed her over the 200-point mark at 205 for her career, which extends her program-best mark. Jakavick had a solid game with three goals and a team-high five groundballs. Freshman
Hannah Verrecchia and sophomore
Carleigh Dabritz had one goal apiece, while Lapp and junior
Shannon Neill had three assists each.
Neill, Fitzgerald, Verrecchia, and freshman
Brittany Whaley led the squad with three caused turnovers each, as the Immaculata defense shut down a Marywood offense which had only suffered one CSAC loss on the season.
Sophomore goalie
Christine McIntyre made four key saves on the night, and overall the Mighty Macs dominated possession as they outshot the Pacers, 24-12.
Immaculata was looking to start fast and they got just that in the opening three minutes as Jakavick scored on an assist from Lapp just 33 seconds into the game, and Lopez netted her first of three straight just 2:40 into the contest.
Marywood got on the board at the 25:02 mark to make it 2-1, but Lopez came up big on Senior Night with back-to-back tallies on assists from
Shannon Neill just over two minutes apart midway through the first half to stake IU to a 4-1 advantage.
Marywood would score two goals around a Verrecchia tally to send the low-scoring game into the locker room with Immaculata in front, 5-3.
Just as they did on Tuesday at Lancaster Bible when they shut out the Chargers in the second half, 7-0, the Mighty Macs finished strong outscoring the Pacers 4-1 in the second half to close out the program's first-ever victory over Marywood.
Just as she did in the first half, Jakavick scored quickly, this time on a helper from Lopez to make it 6-3 and she would do it again at the 23:51 mark of the second half on an assist from Neill to swell the lead to 7-3.
Marywood attempted to make a run, scoring a goal with just over 20 minutes remaining, but the Macs responded quickly on a goal from Dabritz to keep the lead at four. Immaculata finished off in style for their last goal as Lapp lofted a high pass from behind the net to Lopez cutting to the net and she reached up, and shot all in one motion to seal the victory for the Mighty Macs, 9-4.
Immaculata will clinch the third seed with a win on Saturday against Cedar Crest in their season finale at 1 p.m.
