IU Hits Their Way To Sixth Straight CSAC Win

Box Score

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa.- After pounding out a program-record 21 hits in yesterday's win, the Immaculata offense stayed red-hot as they put up 13 runs and outlasted Gwynedd Mercy (4-15, 4-7 CSAC) in an offensive shootout, 13-10, to win their sixth consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) game and complete their second straight regular season sweep of the Griffins.  The Mighty Macs (12-8, 7-2 CSAC) have scored 47 runs and collected 51 hits in their last four games.

Several Mighty Macs stood out, led by junior third baseman Rob Wallace who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, an RBI, a walk, and a stolen base.  Junior right fielder Chuck Wyckoff (2-for-3, 2 R, 3 RBIs, HBP, BB), junior first baseman Mike Lascomb (2-for-4, R, 4 RBIs, SB), and sophomore catcher Ryan Tecco (2-for-5, 2 RBIs) all add two hits and combined to drive in nine of the 13 runs out of the 6-7-8 spots in the order.  Freshman leftfielder Coleman Richards entered the game in the fourth inning and made a huge impact scoring a career-high three runs, getting hit by two pitches, hitting a single, and stealing two bases.

On the mound, junior John Ryan struggled, going just 2 2/3 innings and allowing four runs and seven hits, but junior reliever Mike Campisano came in and delivered with 2 1/3 innings of shutout ball while allowing just two base runners to earn the win.  Sophomore Kenny Anderson and junior Nick Campione each pitched two innings and gave up three runs each.

Gwynedd Mercy jumped on Immaculata out of the gates playing as the away team as they grabbed a 4-0 lead through three innings.  The Immaculata offense finally got going in the bottom of the fourth with a little help from the Gwynedd defense.

Wallace singled through the left side and senior Matt Lawson (RBI, 3 R, 3 HBPs) got hit by a pitch to put two on with nobody out.  Wyckoff then came on and dropped down a perfect bunt single, but pitcher Matt Rakus tried to make a play on it and threw it away allowing both Wallace and Lawson to score to put the Macs on the board, now trailing just 4-2.  Tecco stepped up later in the inning and delivered a two-out RBI single up the middle to score Wyckoff and cut the Gwynedd lead to 4-3 through four innings.

Campisano then threw the important shutdown inning, retiring the Griffins in order and the Mighty Macs capitalized with a five-run bottom of the fifth to take a lead they would hold the rest of the way.

In the inning, the Macs scored all five runs with two outs and batted around.  Richards was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a one-out bunt.  Wallace then reached on an infield single and stole second before Lawson was intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs.  Wyckoff then stepped to the plate and came up big with a two-run single through the right side, and Lascomb followed suit with a two-run double to right-center for a 7-4 IU lead.  For the second straight inning, Tecco delivered an RBI single down the right field line as the Macs had taken an 8-4 advantage.

Anderson worked around a two-out double to preserve the four-run lead, and in the bottom of the sixth, Wallace singled for the third straight inning, this one scoring Richards with two outs to swell the lead to 9-4.

Gwynedd Mercy wasn't going away as they got a run in the seventh to cut the lead to 9-5 through seven innings, and they threatened for more in the eighth as they loaded the bases off Anderson with nobody out.

Campione entered the game and retired the first hitter on a pop out before surrendering two runs on a groundout and a single as the Griffins had trimmed the IU advantage to 9-7.

In need of a response to halt the Gwynedd momentum, the Immaculata offense came up with four key insurance runs to put the game away.  For the second time in four innings, Richards was hit by a pitch and stole second with one out.  DiDomenico was then drilled with a pitch and both advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch.  Following a walk by Wallace who had reached for the fourth consecutive time, Lawson was hit by a pitch to bring in Richards.  The same happened to Wyckoff to bring in another run and Lascomb delivered the big blow with a two-run single through the right side that put the Immaculata lead at 13-7 through eight innings.

The Griffins would score three in the ninth, but Campione closed out the 13-10 victory, the sixth straight CSAC win for IU.  It's the longest conference winning streak for the Macs since April 2nd through 26th of 2011 when the team won nine straight.

Immaculata will briefly step out of conference play when they host Swarthmore on Wednesday at 4 p.m., but they will look ahead to a three-game CSAC series against Centenary beginning with the single game at IU on Friday, followed by the doubleheader at Centenary on Saturday.

NOTES: Wallace is just three hits away from becoming the fifth Mighty Mac in team history to reach the 100-hit mark … The Macs were hit by seven pitches in the game, which is second most in a game in IU history … Lawson tied teammate Jason McCormick's program-record by getting hit three times in a single game … The win is the 49th of head coach Bryan Torresani's career, which makes him the winningest coach in program history ahead of Patrick Swift.
