Box Score 2 FORT PIERCE, Fla.- In their fourth of five days of competition, the Immaculata offense broke out in a big way, scoring 28 runs over two games and sweeping Martin Luther College (0-2) by scores of 10-7 and 18-2. The Mighty Macs set a season-high with 10 runs and tied a season-high with 10 hits, and then eclipsed both of those marks with 18 runs and 12 hits in game two.
In the first game, the Mighty Macs used a consistent offensive attack, scoring in five of their six at bats, to build up a lead that they would hold on to in the 10-7 victory. Junior third baseman
Rob Wallace had a big day, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, and four RBIs to lead the IU attack. Freshman second baseman
Pat Devenney (2-for-2, 2 R, 3B, BB) reached base all three times, while junior first baseman
Ryan Ficca (2-for-3, R, RBI, SB) and junior centerfielder
Rick DiDomenico (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBIs, 2B, SB) added two hits each.
On the mound, freshman
Ryan Joyce (1-0) got the start and went four innings, allowing just two hits and two runs, while striking out five. Sophomore
Kenny Anderson ran his scoreless inning streak to six after another 1-2-3 frame with two strikeouts. Sophomore
Kyle Bacher came on to get the last out to stop a Martin Luther rally to earn his first career save.
The Macs scored in the first as they led wire-to-wire in this one with sophomore designated hitter
Jason McCormick (0-for-1, 2 R, 3 SB, 2 BB) getting hit by a pitch, stealing second, and then coming around on an RBI single by Wallace. Joyce worked around a walk in the first, two walks in the second, and another in the third to send the game to the bottom of the third with a 1-0 lead still.
After having a run cut down at the plate in the second in what turned out to be their only scoreless inning, the Mighty Macs got back to work in the third with McCormick getting it started with a walk. DiDomenico then singled and the two of them executed a double steal, and the catcher's throw sailed away which allowed McCormick to score for a 2-0 lead. With DiDomenico on third,
Ryan Ficca singled him in to go up 3-0.
Martin Luther fought back in the fourth to cut it to 3-2 on the strength of a two-run home run, but the Macs scored three in their half of the fourth to build their advantage back up. Sophomore catcher
Ryan Tecco reached on a bunt single with one out and moved to second on a walk by Devenney. Following a strikeout, DiDomenico delivered a big two-out double and Wallace then replaced him with a run-scoring double of his own to go up 6-2.
Following Anderson's scoreless frame, the Macs added two unearned runs in the fifth with one of them coming on a squeeze play by freshman shortstop
Brad Misialek (0-for-1, RBI, BB, SAC), to push their advantage to 8-2 through five.
Martin Luther wasn't going away, getting two runs off junior pitcher
Matt Dolan, but the IU offense was there again with a response, this time on a two-run double by Wallace to maintain their six-run lead at 10-4.
The Knights scored three in the seventh, and had the tying run at the plate with two outs, but Bacher induced a flyout to end the game, and wrap up IU's second straight win, 10-7.
In the second game, the Macs had two six-run innings, in the fourth and sixth innings to pull away from the Knights and lock up their third straight win, 18-2. Freshman
Collin Stringham (1-0) had an outstanding first collegiate start, going six innings, giving up just two hits and collecting an IU season-high 10 strikeouts.
Offensively, the Mighty Macs scored their most runs since an 18-6 win over Cairn on April 26
th, 2013. Freshman third baseman
Connor Kerns (2-for-3, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2 2B, BB), senior designated hitter
Matt Lawson (2-for-3, 3 R, 2 RBIs, HBP, BB), and freshman right fielder
Coleman Richards (2-for-4, R, 2 RBIs, BB) each collected two hits, while sophomore
Chris Goggin (first career hit), and junior
Mike Lascomb (1-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI) each had two RBIs. As a team, the Mighty Macs were hit by a pitch eight times, a new single game program record.
Much like the first game,
Jason McCormick (1-for-2, 2 R, SB, 2 HBP) started it off by getting hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third, and came home on a groundout by Lascomb. IU added three more in the third inning to push their lead to 4-0. Junior centerfielder
Rick DiDomenico (3 SB, BB, 2 R) walked to lead off the inning and stole second. After Lascomb was hit by a pitch, they executed a double steal to put two runners in scoring position. Kerns then delivered a big swing with a two-run double. A run would later come around to score on an error by the Knights.
Stringham did a great job keeping the Knights in check all day, collecting 10 strikeouts, including eight looking, which was a new program record. He allowed a single in the first and the sixth, the only hits he allowed on the day, and at one point retired 13 straight hitters between the first and fifth innings.
Immaculata blew the game open with a six-run fourth inning when they sent 11 hitters to the plate, had four hits, two hit batters, and two reach by error. McCormick got things started with a single and stolen base and moved to third when DiDomenico reached on an error. After
Ryan Ficca (1-for-2, R, HBP, BB, SB, 2B) got hit to load the bases with one out, Lascomb singled home a run and Kerns hit a sacrifice fly to bring home another. Lawson added an RBI single, and Richards brought home another run with an infield RBI single where the ball was thrown away, allowing Lawson to come around to score. Richards would come home on an error for the final run of the inning and a 10-0 lead.
In the fifth, the Macs got a run when Goggin pinch ran for Ficca, who doubled to start the inning, and scored on a throwing error by the catcher after advancing to third on a wild pitch. Richards later brought home Kerns with an RBI single.
The Immaculata offense kept going in the sixth with six more runs. Freshman
Adam Connor (1-for-2, R, RBI, SB) hit an RBI single, Goggin added a two-run double, and Lawson hit an RBI double to finish off the Immaculata attack.
The Mighty Macs will now go to their final day of play on Friday morning when they face Kenyon College in a doubleheader at 9 a.m.
