Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla.- In the final day of competition of their spring break trip in Clermont, Florida, the Immaculata softball team played two tight ball games, but ended up with a pair of two-run losses, first to Muhlenberg by a score of 7-5, and then 5-3 to Adrian to conclude their six-game trip in Florida. The Mighty Macs (0-6) will return back north and begin gearing up for Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play.
In the first game of the day, the score was tied 1-1 heading into the fifth, and IU took a brief 2-1 lead, but Muhlenberg scored six unanswered runs to take a 7-2 lead into the seventh inning. The Macs rallied in the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate, but they were unable to come all the way back in the 7-5 defeat.
Freshman pitcher
Caitlin Brasier (0-4) gave up five earned runs and struck out two in her second complete game in as many days. Senior centerfielder
Christiana Donofry had two hits and two runs scored, while freshman shortstop
Annemarie Bartow (2-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBIs, HR, 2B) hit her second home run of the trip.
Donofry got the offense going right away in the top of the first as she singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman designated player
Kelsey Collevechio (1-for-2, 2 SAC). Junior second baseman
Melissa Ejk (1-for-3, R, RBI) then singled her in for a 1-0 IU lead. Muhlenberg responded with a run in their half of the first on a one-out RBI double to tie the game.
Brasier threw well through four innings, but the IU offense could not jump in front until the fifth when they scored one to go up 2-1 on the strength of Bartow's two-out solo home run.
Just like the first inning, Muhlenberg responded with two runs on four hits to take a 3-2 lead through five. Muhlenberg would add four more in the sixth, two of them unearned, to take a commanding 7-2 lead, but the Mighty Macs weren't done yet.
In the top of the seventh, Donofry reached on an error to start the frame and moved to second on a one out walk by Ejk. Bartow then got her second RBI of the day on a double, and a groundout scored Ejk to make it 7-4. The Macs would add one more on an error, but they were unable to get any closer in a 7-5 defeat.
Against Adrian in game two, the Macs fell behind 4-0 through two and a half innings and battled back to within two runs, but were unable to come all the way back in a 5-3 defeat. Sophomore pitcher
Meghan Kugler went the distance, giving up three earned runs while striking out five and walking none. Offensively,
Melissa Ejk had two RBIs.
The Bulldogs scored one in the top of the first and added three more in the third to take a 4-0 lead, but the Macs responded in the bottom of the third. Christina Donofry and
Angelina Welch each reached base and Ejk then brought them both home with a single to right field to make it 4-2.
Adrian would get an extra run in the fourth to extend their lead to 5-2, but the Mighty Macs would not go away as freshman
Kelsey Collevechio singled home Welch who scored her second run of the game.
Trailing by two entering the sixth, the Macs put together a great chance as they loaded the bases with one out on a walk by junior
Caitlyn Hudock, a single by
Kathleen Devaney, and a walk by
Tabitha Mulholland, but a fielder's choice forced out pinch runner
Brittany Merkle at the plate, and a strikeout ended the threat.
The Mighty Macs will return home next week and take on Alvernia in a home doubleheader at 3 p.m.
