Hughes' Career-Day Not Enough In 17-11 Defeat

Box Score

BRYN ATHYN, Pa.- The Immaculata men's lacrosse team jumped out to an early 5-1 lead after the first quarter on Wednesday afternoon, but Bryn Athyn (2-0) took control by outscoring IU 7-2 in the second quarter and holding on the rest of the way as they dealt the Mighty Macs (0-5) a 17-11 defeat.  Sophomore Doug Hughes scored a career-high four goals in the loss.

Freshman Mike Reardon (one assist) and freshman Brendan Doyle each scored two goals, while sophomore Ben Lerario and freshman Tyler Black each had a goal and an assist.  Sophomore Don Schiffer made five saves in goal.

The Macs started the game on fire by scoring five of the first six goals.  Reardon scored just over three minutes into the game in a man-up opportunity and Hughes got his first of the day 1:47 later on an assist from sophomore Sam Zingaro to give the Macs a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the game.

Bryn Athyn then scored a goal to get on the board, but the Macs then closed the quarter with three goals in a 2:50 span toward the end of the first quarter to take a 5-1 lead to the second quarter.  Black scored on an assist from sophomore Tyler Bielecki to go up 3-1, then Lerario and Hughes scored unassisted goals 24 seconds apart to go up by four goals.

Bryn Athyn then responded in a big way in the second quarter with five consecutive goals to erase the deficit and take a 6-5 lead with 7:48 to go before halftime.  Freshman Riley Cocks scored to slow the Bryn Athyn run and tie the game at 6-6, but the hosts scored twice more to go up 8-6 and grab a lead they wouldn't relinquish the rest of the way.

Hughes netted his third of the day with 3:14 to go before halftime to send the game to the locker room with the Macs trailing 8-7.

Bryn Athyn scored five of the first six goals to start the second half with the only IU tally coming from Reardon at the 10:10 mark.  Trailing 13-8, the Macs were in need of a push to get back in the game and they got that with three straight goals in the final 5:11 of the third quarter to pull within two at 13-11.

Hughes scored his fourth of the day before Doyle scored back-to-back goals on dishes from Reardon and Black to pull within two heading into the final quarter, but Bryn Athyn would score all four goals in the final period to take the game, 17-11.

Lerario led the team with six groundballs and Cocks went 18-for-26 on faceoffs.

The Macs will return home on Saturday to host Mount Saint Vincent at 1 p.m. at Draper Walsh Stadium.
