Jumalon's Late Tally Gives IU Huge 2-1 Victory Over Cyclones

Box Score

IMMACULATA, Pa.- With the game tied 1-1 in the waning moments at Draper Walsh Stadium on Saturday afternoon, junior forward Kyle Jumalon ripped a shot from just outside the box into the lower left corner that proved to be the game-winner in a 2-1 victory over Centenary (1-6, 5-2 CSAC) that moved the Mighty Macs (7-9) to 5-2 in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play.

Freshman Alex Noel scored the first goal for the Macs early in the second half to tie it before Jumalon scored the game-winner.  Junior Joe Lubonski made nine saves, several of them in key moments, to earn the victory.

Centenary would take the lead into the locker room as Luis Marin hit a shot from about 20 yards out into the lower left corner past a diving Lubonski for the lone goal of the period in the 16th minute.  The Macs had two quality chances that came up empty despite good pressure.

Freshman Alex Noel dove at a cross and came up just short, and junior Stephen Smith got a head on a free kick from sophomore Ben Gialloreto that the keeper stopped to keep the Macs off the scoreboard.

Centenary would have one more opportunity just before halftime, but junior Corey Burkhart stopped the ball from going in an open net to keep it at a one goal deficit.  The Cyclones outshot the Macs, 11-5, in the opening half.

Just three minutes into the second half, the Mighty Macs got the equalizer on a beautiful shot by Noel to give him seven on the season.  He carried up the right side and lofted a shot from eight yards outside the box that carried just over the outstretched arm of the keeper to tie the game at 1-1.

Noel and junior Pat Friend would each have header opportunities soon after, but both sailed just high or were stopped by the keeper to keep the game tied.

Centenary would increase the pressure, but the IU defense held until Jumalon's heroics with just over seven minutes to go.

The Mighty Macs and Cyclones currently share the same 5-2 conference record and are tied for third in the CSAC, but they own the tiebreaker at the moment.

IU will be back in action to start their final week on Tuesday at Cabrini at 6:30 p.m.
