Sara Smith Reaches 1,000 Points In 69-37 Victory

Box Score

IMMACULATA, Pa.- Immaculata senior guard Sara Smith became the 22nd player in team history to reach the 1,000-point mark for her career with 18 points as she helped lead the Mighty Macs (7-6, 4-0 CSAC) to a 69-37 victory over Cedar Crest (3-11, 2-4 CSAC) on Monday night at Alumnae Hall.

Smith entered the night needing 16 points to reach 1,000 points for her career, and she knocked down a jumper from the baseline at the 16:02 mark of the second half to join the Immaculata record book.

Smith paced the Mighty Macs with 18 points, while senior Mackie Fitzgerald added 15, and sophomore Reilly Larkin chipped in with 10 off the bench.  Smith also led the team with eight boards, and senior Adriana Sciascia had four assists.

Immaculata got off to a torrid start as they scored the first 23 points of the game to take a 23-0 lead and kept the Falcons off the scoreboard for the first 7:42 of the contest.  Eventually they extended their lead to 30 points at 32-2 midway through the first half.

Fitzgerald was instrumental in the run as she knocked down three three-pointers as part of a 7-for-14 shooting display from downtown for the Mighty Macs in the first half.  In the 23-0 start to the game, IU forced seven Cedar Crest turnovers.

After the Falcons got their first bucket, Larkin and senior teammate Lindsay Cras provided a spark off the bench as Larkin scored seven and Cras hit a lay-up to swell the lead all the way to 32-2.

A lay-up by senior Alison Zimny (7 points) gave IU their biggest lead of the half in the closing moments at 44-9, and they took a 44-12 lead to the locker room.

With the game in hand, Smith needed just six points after halftime, and she scored all six in the opening four minutes to reach the career milestone.

Cedar Crest would get the deficit down to 23, but Immaculata closed out their fourth consecutive CSAC victory and fifth straight home win, 69-37.

Immaculata will look to keep both streaks alive on Wednesday when they host Neumann at 6 p.m.

NOTES: Immaculata has now started each of the past two CSAC seasons unbeaten.  Last year, they were 8-0 before their first loss, at home to Neumann … Immaculata assistant coach Chrissy Esbensen was the last Mighty Mac to reach 1,000 points in the 2012-13 season … Zimny reached 200 career rebounds with three tonight.
