Box Score GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa.- The Immaculata baseball team (21-14) looked to avenge a first round playoff loss to Gwynedd Mercy (20-17-1) this afternoon in a CSAC elimination game, but the Mighty Macs were shut out for the first time all season and their 2014 campaign came to a close with a 4-0 defeat. The Mighty Macs set a program record this season by winning 21 games and lost a program-low 14 contests.
Immaculata struggled offensively in the game after scoring 23 runs in the previous two contests. They had just three hits on the afternoon, with senior
Patrick Boulware and sophomore
Rob Wallace picking up singles and senior
Eli Vottero collecting a double.
Freshman
Adam Wheatley (4-3) pitched very well in his first career postseason start going six-plus innings, giving up just three runs and striking out two.
The Griffins got on the board in the second to make it 1-0 and that's where the score would remain for the first five innings.
The Mighty Macs first base runner came in the third when freshman
Howie Kalamets was hit by a pitch but he was doubled off when sophomore
Mike Lascomb lined into a double play.
Wallace got the first hit of the game for the Mighty Macs to lead off the fifth, but he would go no further. Gwynedd Mercy would add single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to make it 3-0.
Immaculata had their best chance of the day in the eighth inning as Vottero doubled to right and Boulware hit an infield single to put two runners on base with nobody out. However, back-to-back foul outs and a fielder's choice ended the threat.
Gwynedd Mercy would add one more in the eighth as the Griffins eliminated the Mighty Macs by a score of 4-0.
Immaculata set program records for most times hit by pitch (70), fewest strikeouts hitting (185), most stolen bases (135), most saves (9), and most strikeouts as a pitching staff (194).
Sophomore
Rick DiDomenico set a new program record for most times hit by a pitch (22) and for most stolen bases (27). Sophomores
Nick Campione (2.32) and
Dan Whalen (2.35) now have the two best ERAs for pitchers in a season for anyone who has thrown 30 innings, while Campione set the new program-record with seven saves. Whalen tied the team-record with five victories this season.
