Box Score IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Mighty Mac baseball team (21-13) staved off elimination in the CSAC Championships with a 12-1 victory over Neumann (17-21) to end the Knights season in the first ever postseason game at Immaculata University. Sophomore
Dan Whalen (5-0) was dominant on the mound once again for Immaculata going a career-best nine innings while scattering six hits and striking out seven for his second career complete game.
Offensively, the Mighty Macs pounded out 14 hits and used a six-run second inning to put the game out of reach early. Freshman second baseman
Nick Comito (3-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB, 2B), sophomore centerfielder
Rick DiDomenico (2-for-5, 3 RBI), sophomore rightfielder
Rob Wallace (2-for-5, R, RBI), senior catcher
Patrick Boulware (2-for-4, 2 R) and sophomore first baseman
Mike Lascomb (2-for-4, 2 2B, 3 R, 3 RBI) led the Immaculata attack, each collecting multiple hits on the afternoon.
After each team was quiet through the first inning and a half, the Mighty Macs broke out with a big inning in the second, putting six runs on the board. Wallace, senior third baseman
Eli Vottero (1-for-4, 2 R, BB), and Boulware singled to load the bases with nobody out. Immaculata got on the board with a bases loaded walk by freshman left fielder
Howie Kalamets (R, RBI, BB) before Lascomb delivered the big blow with a bases clearing double down the right field line to make it 4-0. Comito then doubled to put two runners in scoring position before an RBI groundout by DiDomenico and an RBI single by Wallace made it 6-0 as the Mighty Macs sent 11 hitters to the plate.
Whalen needed a shut down inning and after allowing his first hit of the day, he induced a double play ball to end the threat.
In the bottom of the third, Immaculata tacked on another run as Lascomb hit a two-out double, his second of the day, before coming around to score on an RBI single by Comito to make it 7-0.
Neumann got their only run of the day in the fourth to make it 7-1, but Whalen was lights out otherwise as he had three 1-2-3 innings and never had more than one runner on in an inning. Senior shortstop
Joe DiGiaimo was very solid defensively to help out the sophomore pitcher.
Immaculata would add insurance in the sixth and seventh innings with five more runs. DiDomenico hit a two-run single past a drawn in infield in the sixth as Immaculata led 9-1 through six innings.
In the seventh, a double steal by Boulware and Vottero made it 10-1 before an error and a sacrifice fly by Comito plated the final two runs of the game.
Whalen finished off the Knights in the ninth as the Mighty Macs eliminated a team from the CSAC postseason for the first time in program history.
The 2014 Mighty Macs have set a new program record for victories with 21 this season.
Immaculata is now just one of three teams remaining in the CSAC tournament and they will travel to Gwynedd Mercy tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. to face the Griffins looking to avenge a 20-11 loss from yesterday in the opening round of the tournament.
