Box Score GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Immaculata University's Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship did not get off to the start the Mighty Macs had hoped as the third-seed dropped their opening-round game to second-seeded Gwynedd Mercy Wednesday afternoon, 20-11.
The host Griffins scored during the first three innings, including a 7-0 jump on the Mighty Macs after the second inning.
Eli Vottero tripled to score three runs for Immaculata in the top of third after Gwynedd Mercy loaded the bases with walks to
Nick Comito and
Rob Wallace and a single by
Jason McCormick.
However, after the Mighty Macs cut their deficit to 7-3 midway through the third, Gwynedd Mercy scored four more runs in the bottom of the third to extend its lead to 11-3. The Griffins later scored six runs in the fifth to make their advantage 17-3.
The Mighty Macs responded with a five-run sixth inning to trim the Griffins lead back to single digits.
Patrick Boulware singled to start the inning and was followed by walks to
Howie Kalamets and
Matt Lawson. Comito then singled through the left side to score the first run. McCormick then singled to score the second run, and
Rick DiDomenico had a two-run double down the right field line. The Mighty Macs' fifth run of the inning scored on Wallace's sacrifice fly to right.
Gwynedd Mercy finished its scoring with one run in the sixth and two in the seventh inning.
Immaculata added one run in the seventh as Comito had another RBI single. Then in the ninth, Immaculata drove home two more runs as Comito had a RBI and
Joe DiGiaimo was credited with the RBI on his fielder's choice.
McCormick, Boulware, Kalamets and Comito all had two hits each. McCormick and Kalamets also both walked twice. Vottero and Comito each drove in three runs while DiDomenico had two RBIs.
John Pedorenko took the loss for Immaculata giving up 10 runs on 10 hits during 2.2 innings of work.
Top-seeded Keystone defeated fourth-seeded Neumann in the other opening-round game 14-0.
Immaculata will host Neumann on Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. in an elimination game. Gwynedd Mercy travels to Keystone on Thursday as well. The winner of Thursday's Immaculata-Neumann game will play Friday against the loser of the Keystone-Gwynedd Mercy contest.
