Mighty Macs Swept At Marywood

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SCRANTON, Pa.- Following the Easter break, Immaculata looked to build upon a six-game winning streak with a trip to Marywood (12-9, 4-5 CSAC) for a CSAC doubleheader, and the Mighty Macs (14-11, 5-6 CSAC) dropped a back-and-forth first game in extra innings 6-5, before having a late rally come up short in the nightcap, 7-3.

In the first game, the Mighty Macs tied the game in the top of the seventh to send it to extras, and after scoring a run to take a lead in the top of the eighth, Marywood scored two in the bottom of the inning with two outs to claim the conference victory.

In the seventh trailing 4-3, freshman left fielder Howie Kalamets (2 R, HBP) reached second base on an error by the right fielder.  Sophomore first baseman Mike Lascomb (3-for-3, R, SB) then reached on a bunt single to put runners on the corners before freshman second baseman Nick Comito (BB, RBI) executed a safety squeeze to tie the game 4-4.

Sophomore reliever Nick Campione sat Marywood down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extras.

In the top of the eighth, senior shortstop Joe DiGiaimo (1-for-3, 2 R, 2B, HBP) was hit by a pitch and came all the way around to score eventually on a wild pitch to give Immaculata a 5-4 lead.

Campione (1-3) retired the first two hitters he faced in the bottom of the eighth, but three straight hits with the final one coming off the bat of Eric Pulkkinen gave Marywood the 6-5 victory.

Sophomore Dan Whalen started the game undefeated in CSAC play this season, and went 5 1/3 innings surrendering four runs (two earned) with seven strikeouts.

Marywood scored a run in the first to take a 1-0 lead, but Immaculata got it back in the top of the third off a sacrifice fly by sophomore centerfielder Rick DiDomenico (1-for-1, RBI, 2 BB, SB).

Marywood re-took the lead in the bottom of the third, but the Mighty Macs again tied it in the fourth, this time on an RBI single by sophomore third baseman Rob Wallace (2-for-3, RBI).  Junior designated hitter Matt Lawson (1-for-4, RBI) made it 3-2 IU in the top of the fifth with an RBI single of his own.

The Pacers got two runs in the bottom of the sixth off Whalen to take the one-run lead to the seventh.

In the second game, freshman Adam Wheatley (0-1) pitched well, but the Immaculata offense started very slowly.  Anderson went four innings, and surrendered three runs while striking out five.

The Mighty Macs fell into a 7-0 hole through five innings and attempted to mount a late rally, but it wasn't enough as they were swept in the doubleheader.

Marywood scored three runs in the second inning including a two-run homer that gave the Pacers a lead they wouldn't give up the rest of the way.

Marywood added four more against sophomore Matt Dolan and freshman Chris Goggin in the fifth to take the insurmountable lead.

The Mighty Macs finally broke through in the sixth when DiGiaimo (3-for-4, R) and Wallace (1-for-2, R) hit a single and double, respectively, to put two in scoring position with nobody out.  Senior Eli Vottero (RBI) then hit an RBI groundout and Lascomb (RBI) hit a sacrifice fly to make it 7-2.

In the seventh, Comito (2-for-3, R) led off with a double and came around to score on an RBI single by Lawson (1-for-3, RBI), but DiGiaimo hit into a double play to end the game with the Pacers winning 7-3.

Immaculata will look to salvage one game in the series tomorrow afternoon when they host Marywood at 3 p.m.
