Vottero's Late Single Gives Immaculata 7-6 Win

Box Score

IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Mighty Macs (13-9) fought their way to a fifth straight victory on Monday afternoon behind a tie-breaking, two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning by senior Eli Vottero to give them the 7-6 win over Stevenson (10-18).  The win was also the sixth straight non-conference victory for IU.

Immaculata had 12 hits and 11 stolen bases on the day.

Stevenson struck with two runs in the first off freshman starting pitcher Dom Cocco to take the early lead.  The Mighty Macs, however, battled back quickly as they got one back in the first with a two-out RBI single off the bat of sophomore rightfielder Rob Wallace (2-for-4, RBI, SB) to score Vottero (2-for-4, R, RBI, 3B, SB), who tripled with one out.

Cocco had a clean second inning and the Mighty Macs would score two in the bottom of the frame to take the one-run lead.  Sophomore Rick DiDomenico (2-for-3, 2 RBIs, 2 SBs, R, 2 BBs) hit a two-out, two-run single to put IU in front to score freshman second baseman Nick Comito (1-for-3, R, SB) and freshman catcher Ryan Tecco (2 R, 2 BB, SB).

In the third, Cocco ran into trouble and only faced two hitters before being replaced by sophomore reliever Matt Dolan.  The Mustangs would go on to score three in the inning off Dolan to take a 5-3 lead midway through the third.

As they had for the first half of the game, the Mighty Macs scored on a run to cut into the lead in the bottom of the third.  Senior shortstop Joe DiGiaimo (2-for-5, R, RBI, SB) singled and stole second to lead off the inning.  Wallace moved him to third with a single, who then stole second himself to put two runners in scoring position with nobody out.  After a strikeout, sophomore Mike Scisci (RBI, SB) executed a safety squeeze to score DiGiaimo and make it 5-4.  Immaculata would try to add another run later in the inning, but Wallace's stolen base attempt of home was unsuccessful.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Mighty Macs would tie it as Tecco walked, moved to second on a throwing error, and stole third with nobody out.  DiGiaimo would bring him in to tie the game 5-5.

Dolan had the first 1-2-3 inning of the day in the top of the fifth and Immaculata had their fourth one-run inning of the game to this point.  Senior designated hitter Pat Boulware (1-for-4, R, SB, 2B) doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt.  After sophomore first baseman Mike Lascomb was hit by a pitch, the two executed a double steal to score the go-ahead run.

Stevenson put two runners in scoring position with one out against Dolan in the top of the sixth, but freshman reliever Matt Goggin came on to get two strikeouts to end the threat with the Mighty Macs still leading.

Dolan went 3 1/3 innings and surrendered two unearned runs.

Stevenson tied the game in the seventh on a run charged to senior Greg Binfield.  Sophomore reliever Nick Campione got the Mighty Macs out of trouble by inducing a double play ball.

Campione (1-1) pitched a scoreless eighth to set the stage for the Mighty Macs to take the late lead.

With two outs, DiDomenico laced a ball into the left field corner for a double before Vottero brought him home with the game-winning single.

Sophomore Josh Pedorenko pitched a scoreless ninth for his first collegiate save.

Immaculata will stay in non-conference play on Wednesday when they travel to Lebanon Valley for a 3:30 p.m. game.
