Box Score 2 IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata baseball team (12-9, 5-4 CSAC) surged over-.500 in league play by completing a sweep of Cairn on Saturday afternoon by scores of 7-3 and 4-1. After stealing 14 bases in Friday's 9-1 victory over the Highlanders, the Mighty Macs stole 15 more bags to give them a program-record 29 for a three-game series.
In the opener, Immaculata needed a five-run fifth inning to break open a 2-2 game en route to the 7-3 victory. Freshman
Adam Wheatley (1-1) got the first win of his Immaculata career with five effective innings, striking out four and surrendering two runs (one earned). Sophomore
Nick Campione got his first of two saves on the day with 1 1/3 innings of perfect ball, including two strikeouts.
The Mighty Macs struggled early offensively as they trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the fourth without a hit thus far. Sophomore centerfield
Rick DiDomenico (2 R, HBP, SB) got the rally started by getting hit by a pitch, stealing second, and moving to third on a groundout. He would then cut the lead in half by scoring on a wild pitch. Senior shortstop
Joe DiGiaimo (1-for-2, 2 R, RBI, 2 SB) restarted the rally and stole second and third before back-to-back walks loaded the bases with one out. Freshman left fielder
Howie Kalamets (1-for-2, 3 RBIs) then hit a long fly ball to right field that was tracked down, but scored DiGiaimo from third to tie the game 2-2 through four innings.
Wheatley set the Highlanders down in order in the fifth to allow Immaculata to take the lead in the bottom of the frame by sending nine hitters to the plate. The Mighty Macs loaded the bases with one out on a single by freshman pinch hitter
Jason McCormick (1B, R, SB) and back-to-back walks. DiGiaimo and sophomore right fielder
Rob Wallace (R, RBI, 2 BB, SB) then each scored runs by walking with the bases loaded to make it 4-2 and chase the Cairn starting pitcher. Senior catcher
Patrick Boulware (1-for-2, RBI, SB) then delivered an RBI single to centerfield and Kalamets had a two-run single through the left side made it 7-2 through five innings.
Campione finished off the Highlanders for the game one victory.
In game two, senior
John Pedorenko (2-0) earned his second victory of the season in his first start by allowing just one hit and one walk over four shutout innings of work.
He gave up his only hit in the top of the first, but got out of the inning unscathed.
In the bottom of the inning, Immaculata would score three runs that proved to be all they would need on the strength of what turned out to be their only hit of the day. DiDomenico (R, SB) was hit by a pitch, stole second, and moved to third on a fly out with one out. Much like the first game, DiDomenico would score the first Immaculata run on a wild pitch to make it 1-0 early. DiGiaimo (2 R, BB, 3 SB) restarted the inning with a walk, got to second and stole third. Wallace (R, 2 BB, 2 SB) then walked to put runners on the corners and the two executed a double steal for a 2-0 lead. Boulware (1-for-3, 2B, RBI) would double in the third run of the first for the early lead.
Pedorenko would then retire nine of the next 10 hitters he faced to keep the Cairn offense at bay. In the third, the Mighty Macs added an insurance run after DiGiaimo was hit by a pitch, stole second, stole third, and scored on an errant throw by the catcher for a 4-0 lead.
Cairn added a run in the sixth off sophomore pitcher
John Ryan, but Campione came in to to close the door in the seventh for his fourth save of the season, giving him the most in a single season (4) and the most in a career (7).
The Mighty Macs will head back into non-conference play on Monday when they host Stevenson at 4 p.m.
