Lebanon Valley Sweeps Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FORT PIERCE, Fla.- The Mighty Macs looked to bounce back from two losses yesterday as they took on Lebanon Valley in a doubleheader, but the Dutchmen (3-3) surrendered just eight hits all day to the Mighty Macs (1-4) and swept the doubleheader by scores of 7-5 and 7-1 at the Florida Coast Spring Training.

In the first game, the Mighty Macs tried to rally late for the second consecutive day for a come-from-behind victory, but Lebanon Valley was able to wiggle out of the jam for the 7-5 victory.  Immaculata had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the seventh, trailing by just one run, but sophomore Rob Wallace (2-for-4, 2 RBIs) flew out before senior Patrick Boulware struck out to end the game.

Immaculata used six Dutchmen errors, along with six walks and one hit batsman to produce their offense in the opener.  Wallace had the only two hits for IU, but the Mighty Macs were threatening all day.

The Mighty Macs struck first in the top of the first as freshman second baseman Jason McCormick (0-for-1, 2 BB, HBP, 2 R) scored on an error and senior shortstop Joe DiGiaimo came around on an RBI single off the bat of Wallace to stake them to the early 2-0 lead.

Sophomore John Ryan (0-1) got his first start of the season on the mound and threw well early, as he retired nine of the first ten hitters, with two of them coming on strikeouts.

Immaculata added another unearned run in the third inning as sophomore catcher Rick DiDomenico produced a run with his legs.  He walked, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an error by the catcher to make it 3-0.

The Dutchmen would take the lead in the fourth as the first six players reached base, five by base hit, and five of them would score to give Lebanon Valley the 5-3 lead.  They sent 10 hitters to the plate in the inning.

The Mighty Macs showed some fight by coming back in the top of the fifth with two more unearned runs, including one scoring on another RBI knock by Wallace, to tie the game 5-5.

Lebanon Valley would take the 7-5 lead in the bottom of the fifth as four straight hitters laced base hits with two of them coming around to score to knock Ryan out of the game.  Senior John Pedorenko came in and quieted the rally before pitching a perfect sixth.

In game two, Lebanon Valley scored all seven runs from the 2nd to the 4th innings to take a commanding lead against freshman Adam Wheatley, who was making his first career start.  Wheatley went 3 2/3 innings, surrendering seven hits and seven runs while striking out two.

Wheatley worked around two baserunners in the first inning, but he surrendered an RBI triple and a wild pitch allowed another run to score to make it 2-0 Dutchmen through two innings.

A two-run double in the third would make it 4-0 before Immaculata was able to get on the board.  Senior Joe DiGiaimo (2-for-3, RBI) drove in sophomore left fielder Rick DiDomenico (R, SB) for what would turn out to be the Mighty Macs only run of the game.  Immaculata was threatening for more in that inning with the bases loaded and one out, but Boulware (1-for-3) grounded into a sharp double play to end the threat.

In the fourth inning, Lebanon Valley added three more runs and chased Wheatley from the contest.  Senior Greg Binfield came on to put out the fire with a fly out to center field.  That would be the only hitter he would face, but sophomores Matt Dolan and Nick Campione combined for three shutout innings, five strikeouts, and just one hit allowed.

The Mighty Macs were unable to mount a late rally as the final ten hitters were retired in order.

Immaculata will look to snap their four game skid on Thursday after an off day tomorrow as they take on Elizabethtown starting at 9 a.m.

NOTES: Pedorenko has started the season with 5 2/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen for IU.
